hi all
first off i haven't a clue about anything dslr but im determined to get one and learn

in my local currys/pc world they have a k-r only £249 because it's a ex display model
iv looked at it and it looks clean .can anyone tell me what i need to look out for before buying it
damage etc that not noticeable to a newbee
the store are giving the usual 12 months warranty on it
the assistant said it had been on display for two months
any help would be appreciated
one last thing ...is there any way on the camera i can tell how many times it's been fired ..
thanks

It's a good price. Is it a brand new camera? I wouldn't worry too much about how many times it's been fired. If you buy it you can find that out but at that price I'd snap it up to be honest; the K-r is a very able camera.

If it looks clean in general, that's a good sign. If you didn't notice any large scratches on the LCD, then that bodes well too. One other thing might be the inside.....stores often leave lenses off on DSLR's that are on display (and I assume this price is just for the body?). The sensor might be dirty, but that should clean up if that is the case.

I would say as long as everything else functions well (did you power it up?) and it has the warranty (the store is offering its own in addition to the Pentax warranty?), then that is a decent price and is definitely worth purchasing if you don't want to save up for a new one in the box.

thanks both for your replies
it is new and the outside is pristine
when i looked at it one thing concerned me ...when i pressed the shutter it gave a almighty clunk
the lense is still packed away in the box
i think im going to risk it as currys are still sticking on the 12 month warranty
so if there is a fault ill just go and get my money back
thanks again

Certainly if you are seriously interested I wouldn't hang around. Phone them to make sure it's still there and get them to hold it for you until you can get there.
Best regards, John

That's normal for the K-r. Not a DSLR for 'stealth mode' Doesn't stop it being a great camera though

The KX and slightly less so the KR have a noisy action. The K5 is whisper quiet.

I'm concerned that 'display' in Currys means out for kids to mess with and not even a body cap on in some cases. When i bought a serviced return compact for my wife from their clearance store they sold me three years warranty (including accidental damage) for only £10

£249 is a great price. With the warranty in place, I'd bite their arm off. Currys are also very decent about it if you change your mind a few days after purchase.

Already having a K-5 and having just bought Petemasty's K-R for travelling, I fully second that comment - the difference is very noticeable!
Also, you'd get it for quite a bit less than I paid Pete!! (not that I got a bad deal!!)
K-3 II, K-3 and a K-70 from SRS (having now relegated the K-30 /"K-50" to a backup body), & some Sigma and Pentax lenses (and a lot of old 35mm gear!)

hi all
just to let to know i got the camera
i walked into curry's today with my eyes closed scared to look in case it had gone lol
but no it was still there
and to cap it all i thought it was £249
it wasn't it was £229
the manager said he couldn't understand why it had been there so long
with no interest
i think it's because the curry's i went to is just outside of the merry hill center and they got one inside the center so more people go to the one inside
iv got my 12 month warranty plus brought another 2 year one
just hope the weather is ok tomorrow going to try it out

Congrats - WHAT a result!!!

Just shows never to take the most obvious approach or the most well advertised promotion!
And also takes a little of my guilt away that I beat you to Pete's copy

That was an absolute bargain! The KR is a very capable camera which will give excellent results. The KR has features for people new to slr's to learn with, right through to experienced enthusiasts who need more manual control etc. A great buy!
