1. Are you waiting for the "hand" symbol to appear in the viewfinder?
2. What lens are you using ?
3. Have you tried manually setting the focal length in the SR menu ?

I am using one of the kit Pentax lenses 18-55 that comes with the k-7
Yes I did wait for the hand
Not tried setting the focal length, but I shouldnt need to with the Pentax lense on I think.

The reason for asking if you can set the S/R manually is that it might tell you if the camera is picking up the focal length from the lens automatically (which you are correct, it should)
Can you post the two pictures on here with exif intact so we can have a peek.

I had a look at the sharper image and the exif shows you had S/R on with that too ?

yes I did see that on the exif data, but the display on the camera definitely said it was off, Hand with red line through it.

I would do a bit more testing to see if you can repeat this.

On the first pair the sharper one was taken using live view which turns the SR function off I believe.

Live view doesn't turn SR off.

On Page 134 of the Manual where it says Caution. One of the points mentioned in the list of situations when SR is turned off is "Mirror lock up shooting" I took this to be the same as going into Live view, as Live view effectively takes the mirror out of the way.

For some reason (and there are already many threads dedicated to trying to figure out why) SR is not supposed to be employed with tripod work. When you use the camera's self-timer (the only "traditional" way to get mirror lock up) the camera assumes you're using a tripod and so automatically switches off SR.On Page 134 of the Manual where it says Caution. Although you're right in saying the mirror is out of the way during Live View sessions I would doubt that SR would be disabled in the same fashion. You can check this for yourself though by simply entering LV and then switching SR on and off, if it hasn't been disabled then you should see the image on the screen stabilise. I don't have a K7 (or K20D) of my own to check with unfortunately.

Gwyn posted this in another thread, and it may be worth upgrading your firmware to eliminate some potential causes of problems:
