Don't think of it just as a battery, think of it as part of your £500+ camera equipment

I think of it as a lens I could have bought (Or percentage of!)

I'm glad to hear the rumour that the K-r will have an AA battery insert, which gets round these issues... we'll see more on that tomorrow I hope!

I don't understand this discussion. Here you are spending hundreds of pounds on a camera, then trying to save a few pounds on batteries. Doesn't make sense to me.

Surely the time spent and the risk involved are not worth it.

If you can afford the camera, you can also afford decent batteries.
Me too.

Pentax don't make batteries. The Chinese do. The super cheap versions work very well, so why not use them.

I have just ordered one of these

Once its here, I'm going to fit a two cell 2200mA LiPo battery link by cannibalising the insert. I run all of my rechargeable drills on the same things (voltage matched).

I have one original Pentax branded battery, the rest are ten quid third party cells that work fine.

The cheap grip and bigger LiPo will just add a little more cacity.

I wonder why all my Pentax ones say 'Made in Japan', Pentax must be telling fibs.

I've had two original Pentax batteries for the K20D for about 18 months. They still work perfectly. I've also got two cheap ebay batteries (different makes) which were OK at first but after 9 months I could only get about 50 shots out of each compared with probably 500+ off the originals. All charged in the Pentax charger.

If Pentax tried to sell you 4xAA batteries for £50 for a K-x, would that make sense? Would you accept that and happily pay that price?

Or would you buy Eneloops for less than a tenner?

People understand that point quite well.

Now, make the AAs very slightly larger, put 'em in a plastic case and slap a Pentax sticker on it and it's now worth £60?

We can put 6x AA batteries into a K-7 grip to power it and avoid using any 'official Pentax battery' at all, what would you recommend there?

link from 7dayshop. It is the full capacity one unlike the INOV8 which is only 1300mAh or so (and the one available from SRS). I have both and both work fine

Thanks for all the replies! Interesting how a simple request for advice on what replacement battery to choose can turn into such a debate!

I was going to go for the 7dayshop one but I see they are out of stock - probably as a result of this thread! Note to self... must be quicker!

Used to buy all my film via 7dayshop... I even felt a twinge of nostalgia as I typed in the link, as it's been years since I shopped with them!

I usually don't mind spending the extra cash for the real thing. However, all I'm after is a stock of emergency power to tide me through a few days of extended shooting. I cannot recall the last time that I managed to get through the 2 x originals that I already have and therefore spending 60 quid a piece is too steep for me!

Tottally accept that Ken, however, Pentax do not make batteries.

This is also still an issue though less and less nowadays. You can still get rogue batteries that are low capacity variants.

That in itself may back up the "buy branded" battery line of thought.

Each to their own at the end of the day. The battery/camera combination is no different to brake pads and other car related items where many people use third party replacement parts or comsumables. Even memory crds fall into this area.

This is an extremely dangerous post and should be ignored. 240VAC should be regarded as a lethal voltage.

That is an absolutely rip off. The 'cheap' batteries I have for my K20D and K10D work absolutely fine and just as good as the branded Pentax batteries that came with the cameras.

If anyone is stupid enough to pay £55 for a battery when you can get them for £7 each then that's their fault. That's not just saving a 'few quid' that's almost an 8x price difference.

Nobody should be in any doubt that the 240 V mains supply in the UK is deadly, although it is indeed the current that is the dangerous bit.

My Fraunhauf Induction Coil delivers voltages of around 10,000 V from a 4.5 V battery, and was used in the 1920s and 1930s for medical purposes. The current is very, very low though. In the 1960s the family used in for fun at parties!

As regards the batteries, people are not stupid because they choose a course of action different to our own. They have different opinions, and all opinions are based on their own perceptions and requirements.
Best regards, John
