You don't need to have the grip turned on until you are ready to utilise it, It will still power the body even when switched off.

When I was using a grip I had it setup to use the grip battery first, when this was depleted it would revert to the body battery, I would then remove the grip battery for replacement with a spare (if you have 3 batteries) or recharge it. Once replaced it would automatically revert back to the grip. This eliminates the need to remove the grip and replace the body battery.
You don't need to have the grip turned on until you are ready to utilise it, It will still power the body even when switched off.

I also leave the grip turned on all the time because it turns off when the main switch is off.
I think it's all down to what suits you.
Find that leaving the grip switched on depletes the batteries - and that's not just the K7.

I never put a camera in the body........
Sorry couldn't resist
I never put a camera in the body, just use the main battery in the grip and when it depletes I replace it with the second battery. That way I never need to take the grip off the camera.
I also leave the grip turned on all the time because it turns off when the main switch is off.
I think it's all down to what suits you.

I bought a battery grip and spare battery for my K-7 today. I've read both manuals but I'm still slightly confused (which isn't hard lol)
The battery selection option is set to the default 'Auto Select' which is priority is given to the battery with the most remaining power.
The manual says that when the currently selected battery runs out I turn the camera off then on again and the camera will switch to the remaining battery.
I know I don't need to turn the grip on until I want to shoot in portrait.
My (probably daft) question is, once one battery has run out and I have switched the camera on and off do I also need to turn the grip on or does the camera just use the power from the grip battery if the camera battery runs out first.
Regards, Chris.
