K-7 and lens distortion correction

Everybody says the K-7 saves images faster than the k-20d, but that wasn't my experience. Actually, it was way slower than my K20D. This morning, I tried an old Nikon (shame) lens on the K-7, and, lo and behold, the image was saved almost instantly. So, being as smart as Sherlock Holmes, I investigated to try to see what the problem might be. And, since I'm smart, I figured it out. I had "lens distortion correction" and "chromatic aberration correction" set to "on". The dcamera takes a faily long time to process the information, even in RAW, so if you find your K-7 kind of slow to save or display an image, look at those two parameters first. Just in case you're no Sherlock Holmes . I guess now is as good as any other time to go and hide before you start throwing empty beer bottles at me.

But shouldn't you have them switched on?........These settings must be some of the improvements over the K20, so why not use them?......

Personally, I think these might have a place for those shooting JPEG, but none if shooting RAW.

Feature bloat, if you ask me.

Why do you need them, Pentax lenses tend to be the best...

I would of thought a firmware fix could be in order for this because it does slow things down even if you are only shooting RAW.

As far as I can tell the RAW file remains untouched

Then probable the JPG preview image you see with RAW is effected, there are some ways to get that preview image off from the RAW file so that you can compare the two, simply google for that.

Actually Stefan it's pretty easy to do with the RAW+ button, I just made a comparison between the DNG and Jpeg in CaptureOne 4.8, the difference is quite obvious

When the corrections are "on", you can only "machine gun" for five frames before the buffer fills up. And, in video mode, it cuts on your "shooting" time, and it takes forever for the buffer to clear. In RAW mode, it seems to me like it's marking the file so "Pentax Utility 4" will correct the files automatically.

Ah yes but you said it also does it when you shoot RAW only, it's of course logical it does it to the JPG image with RAW+ but why does it have to do it with only RAW.

So if it does it to the JPG preview in the RAW file you know why it does it.

Hmmm, you may have a point there

As Yves says, the lens correction information is supposedly stored in the RAW files. If your RAW converter supports the feature then it will use it to correct the image. Apparently the latest Adobe RAW converter included an update to do this, as does the shipped Pentax software (which I'm not impressed with).
