So you can tag your photos in camera instead of with the aid of a computer. Cuts down processing time. Geo-tagging photos is very useful, especially when you have taken a few thousand on holiday and can't remember which lighthouse is which or which beach you were on. It means people can see exactly 9well nearly exactly) where you were when you took a photo. Currently you have to have a separate logger and a program on the computer to write the tags to your exif, unless you have a Nikon when you can get a logger for on the hot shoe which writes direct to the EXIF.

GPS is used to geotag an image with the exact location from where it was taken. It doesn't include a mapping system to get you home.

Ever heard of Google Earth? All the images from Joe Public that you see on there are geotagged.

Having recently been shown half a dozen pix of 'the petrol station where we filled up our bikes' in a slide show of holiday pictures, if I have to sit through that plus 'and here's exactly where we were when we took this one' I shall top myself.

As far as I know GPS is a passive system Andy, you don't send info to the satellite so... how should the camera send info to you?

well I know its possible to use GPS to track a Iphone using google maps.

As I understand it, It sends a signal to the satellites, google maps takes the co-ordinates and displays them on a PC as a anti theft thingy.

That is for jail broken Iphones atm as far as ime aware tho.

Right idea, but not accurate.

As mentioned GPS receivers in devices such as phones, cameras etc do not send their location to satellites as they are not powerful enough to send signals into outer space! The phone can work out it's exact position using info from satellites, cell sites, and even wifi hotspots that are on a database.

That positional information can by sent using the normal phone signal over the internet, and if you have a mapping program can pinpoint it on a map for you. If you subscribe to Apple's Mobile Me service, you can 'find my iPhone', then once you have found it, send it a message with a 2 minute tone (this is where having a sealed battery comes in handy! No thief can quickly remove the battery and stop you doing this!), or press a button to completely remote wipe your data.

This is why 'find my GPS camera' wouldn't work, unless it was connected to the internet via WIFI, or had a phone built in!

At the moment I am trying to remember to take one photo at each location using my iPhone to get the Geotag data which i will later transfer to photos from my camera, unfortunately I almost always forget to take the iPhone snap!

I have also been considering one of those Eye-Fi wifi-enabled SD cards. Anyone had much experience with those?

One example; nice for travel. When you get home your images are tagged with the coordinates where they were taken. Upload them to something like Flickr and let people see where you've been.

I don't believe any camera has a "find me" feature. Also, no turn by turn directions from your camera... yet.

I use a GPS logger. I don't bother to tell people exactly where a photo was taken, it is for my personal use only. But then again I try not to have slide shows for people either.
Some of my holiday photos are online, for family to see. This lot are not tagged though my husbands are. In jalbum you can click on "see on map" to show where something was taken if you really want to know. I really use it just as to remind myself of where I took a photo, and it's nice to see the route we took on our hols as well, and see how illogical we were .
Wifi is not so important to me but I dare say I'd use it if I had it.
