The higher ISO is certainly a help but much of my macro is done with flash of some description anyway. The IQ just seems to have a different look from the K10D somehow .. but maybe it's just my imagination

No you're right about that, i also never really liked the look what the CMOS sensor produce.
The CCD seems the be cleaner and truer somehow.
I hope the K5 is better in that aspect because the sensor is from Sony and not Samsung, don't know if that might have something to do with it?

If I'd got on better with the K20D I wouldn't bother either. But I didn't get on with it, and the K5 just feels so right for me, so I'm bothering.

I will upgrade from my K10 if the K5 AF really is faster. I await the feedback from the soon to be new owners with interest.

The AF off the K20D was already slightly faster and the AF of the K7 was also slightly faster then the K20D i believe so there must be quite a difference between the K10D and the K5 hopefully. At least the live view contrast AF looks already very good. link

The K5 does have two AF priority modes for AF, shutter and focus.
With shutter it will release the shutter without focus lock but with focus you will need a lock.

Hmm, the second link from Stefan certainly looks promising, but I have found that it is following a moving object that seems to challenge the AF, at leaast it does on my K10

I still haven't gotten everything out of the K10D and I wonder if I ever will but that's not a point to upgrade your camera.
You upgrade your camera because it offers you something that you use that your current camera doesn't or doesn't do so well.
