K-1 Mk II

As and when the K-1 Mk II arrives, I wonder if it will use the new 42Mp FF sensor that the new Alpha 99 II uses? The indicator just may be if Nikon use the sensor first. The old 24Mp FF sensor as used in the Alpha 99 and D750 although excellent, is probably not on the cards for Ricoh. A Ricoh mirror-less M-1 would be a hit with the 36Mp sensor if a new K-1 II or indeed K2D uses the 42Mp sensor.

All possible?

Not sure where this is going. The new top end Nikon and Canon have 20mp sensors for enhanced low light operation; I guess high mp sensors are best for sports and action as long as the frame rate can be maintained, but this isn't the area targeted by Pentax as evidenced by focus speed and the lens roadmaps.

It has nothing to do with low light or sports/action.

I would not agree about high Mp sensors being best for sports and action. As you say, the top Nikon & Canon cameras use 20Mp sensors. Your guess that high mp sensors are therefore best for sports and action may lead one to think that the K-1, D810, 645Z and Hassles & Bladdered fall into this category which is not so.

I was hoping for a medium format size sensor in a M-x mirrorless compact!

I thought that high MP cameras would be good for sport / action because you can crop more, allowing more freedom in framing .... ?

H'mmm. we're suddenly into sports action cameras? Pentax don't do them.

I'm not aware of pro's using D810's or K-1's for sports action but I may be wrong.

Consider the market size for fast accurate high speed sports camera's against the rest of the market usage.

Any one seriously wanting a top sports body at the moment should not look past a D500, it's a no brainer.

A FF mirror-less 36Mp Ricoh M-1 would be a different kettle of fish though.

I am going to contradict my earlier comment as a quick check shows that the pro bodies supplied for the olympics were the Canon 1DX II and Nikon D5, both full frame and low pixel count but fast frame rate as a result. So ultimately you make a choice between frame rate and detail depending on your field, and as K10D indicates the latter is where Pentax focus. But a body must retain a reasonable frame rate to stay commercial and that is the limiting factor to pixel count. Hang on, why am I debating this, I have only just bought the K-1, and no way am I changing in the foreseeable future!

Enjoy your K-1. A winning combination with the right glass up front.

Love the 15-30 f2.8 but it feels like I have added a brick to the camera bag. Looking forward to the new primes next year.

Cameras with larger sensors write larger files which take longer to write to disk. So the smaller the sensor, the quicker the camera can write the files (everything else being equal.) Hence (I suspect) the reason smaller sensor cameras are more suited to sports/action. Using the right lens should avoid the need for cropping! (Hence the monsters pros seem to use.)

For sports photography and most news editorial photography it's all about speed so smaller sensors, Smaller file sizes and fast fps are the key features required. Even wedding photography needs high frame rates now such is the competition and the market.

With a free cheap flimsy tripod, camera bag and memory card included! They'd take the market by storm

I'm hoping the 30% drop in exchange rate reverses and that my current K3 lasts until the super light K3 MK III is on one of those irresistable trade ins SRS pop up with.
