Lemmy, I was talking to David Cairns not so long ago, he has retired and returned to Scotland.

John, I always liked Jack Schofield both as a writer and personally, I'm told he is now editing a computer magazine. He used a Canon but always had tape over the name because he didn't believe a photography magazine editor should unduly influence people.

No, no, no, no, No.

pentax = Saab.

Neglected by parent company (Hoya/GM), limited market share, small product portfolio, left-field thinking, yet still a renowned producer...

You couldn't compare a P30, SFX or ME Super or LX with a 1980s Skoda estelle
I sure hope that you compare Pentax to the Saab range in the 1980's...
All current Saab's are nothing more then restyled Opel (Vauxhall) Vectra's. GM started to destroy the Saab brand right after they bought it.
Same goes for Volvo which is ruined by Ford. The last real Volvo's were the early 850's and the last 940's and 960's.

Well Koenigsegg (makers of expensive supercars) have recently bought Saab, which is the equivalent of Hasselblad stepping in to buy Pentax.

...and my name's already down for the new 1018hp Saab 9-5. Or was that just a dream I had..?

I'd love Saab to go back to their roots and start producing quirky-yet-brilliant cars again, with Koenigsegg at the helm it might even happen!

And Ford baught Volvo, and BMW wogged the Mini image. Saab, and also Pentax, may well benefit from some investment and R&D. So long as they remain true to their image and ethic.
Is there a relationship of Car ownership [Brand] and Camera ownership [Brand]? Do C****n owners really drive Trabants?

I really do think Canon is the BMW of the camera world....

Would you let a Canon-branded car out of a side-road?

I have a 9-3 and it's brilliant, a much better can than the Vectra...relations between Saab and Opel engineers were never cordial, with the Opel guys accusing the Saab guys of overengineering the 9-3 to such an extent that it could not be built in Russelsheim on the same line as the Vectra.

Previously, I owned a 99, that was my favourite car. I felt invincible driving it

I was thinking that as a Dutchman your view of Volvo would have been soured when they stopped making the rubber-belt gearbox of the DAF 66 and Volvo 340, and basing the first S40 on a Mistsubishi Charisma-bypass

that hurts
The thing with SAAB is that when they were on their own they were strong in innovating. They had this very efficient variable compression ratio engine which was killed off just after GM bought them. They even removed it from the SAAB museum in Trollhättan.
