I tried loading the newest 2.01 firmware... with bad results. The firmware update app showed "COMPLETE" and i turned off the camera, turned it on...
and the menus work just fine, the new features and fixes were showing, etc. Bad thing is, in any mode, none of the features worked what so ever(i couldnt take pictures at all, it would not half-shutter focus or take a photo at all.. I have tried charging my batteries full and trying again, but every time i do the firmware flash, it seems like different parts of teh camera's functions work, and do not work... it's bein a little scetchy and random. Maybe do I have to use an AC adapter??

Did you empty the SD card after doing the firmware update? Have you done all the previous updates? I do my firmware updates on battery power (making sure they are fully charged first so that they don't die on me, so that should have caused the problem. Not deleting the update from the SD card could possibly give trouble.
Do you have other lenses to try on your camera to see if it is only with the kit lens or if it is a general fault?
If your camera is under warranty still don't try messing with it yourself - you will nullify your warranty and it could then cost you a packet!

Stevey500,
It would be very foolish to try and 'fix' such a complicated mechanism as a Pentax metering system. Most of the clever bits are inaccesible to Joe Public as they surround the pentaprism/pentamirror.
And if you were to open your camera to 'fix' the problem you would certainly 'break' your warranty. Send it back to Pentax is the best, and probably only, option.
When you downloaded the software, did you get the correct firmware for your model camera?
Have you tried downgrading the firmware to version 2.0?
Version 2.01 doesn't add any new functions anyway unless your were on a pre-version 2.0 release previously. It only adds support for new types of SD card.

that is true, i dont want to do anything obvious to expire my warranty, just looking for a possible easy fix. but yeah i have tried going back to 2.0.. same thing, but if I go back to 1.02 it works just fine in manual mode.

Is there a possibility you are using a faulty card? Try using a different one for the upgrade.
After the upgrade, have you done a full reset to factory defaults?
You don't need to use an AC adapter as long as you are 110% sure your batteries are good and fully charged. You could try a different set of batteries. The flashing process only lasts a minute or so and a fully charged set of good cells will not deplete in that time.

Lots of good advice in this thread, but I think the main one is that cameras, especially modrn ones, are not really suitable for DIY repairs...

Looks like a total recipe for disaster IMO.
@stevey500, do you have a warranty with the camera, is it not a bit too old? If that is the case you might be better contacting one of the independent repairers like Harrow Technical for advice.

All posts but one have been removed. I agree with ken, but FWIW the information is at least relevant in this thread!
