Does the AF360FGZ work with it OK?
In what way does it "not communicate with the body"?
Does it flash, but is uncontrolled?
What lens are you using?
Does your DS have the latest available firmware?
Page 153 of the *istDS web manual explains what functions are available with certain flashes.
Page 177 explains what functions are available with certain lenses.

Yes it flashes but is uncontrolled. Full discharge
I have my DF-A 100mm macro on it.
Firmware version 2.02
I tried the AF360FGZ and its working ok
With camera in AV,P,TV or M and pressing the FN button and selecting the flash modes, it will only allow me to select manual discharge, Auto is greyed out :
But if I use one of the preset modes or Auto Pic it allows for "auto flash" but still not recognising the flash.
I had already checked the Manual and it clearly states it is compatible.
Hmmm not sure whats going on

Yes it is set to Auto TTL.
With the Camera in AV mode and with a D-FA 100mm macro attached, even with the aperture wide open, you would expect the shutter speed to increase accordingly but its only getting up too 10th or 20th sec. The flash symbol on the LCD screen and inside the view fider is flashing suggesting its not seeing the flash and resulting in a greatly over exposed shot.

So, fit the AF080C (TTL flash) and see what the difference is.
In this situation, it's best to quote exactly what is set or not set. To that end, looking at only the flash settings on the AF500FTZ, I don't know what you mean by Auto TTL, it's either TTL, M, or M followed by 3 lightning bolts. There is no mention of auto anywhere. If, by Auto, you mean A Zoom, that's irrelevant to this issue.

Just a suggestion. Take a pencil eraser and srub the flash contacts. I just went through a problem with my AF 280T on my DS. The contacts looked clean, but were not. Works fine now.
