issue with AF360FGZ

I've noticed that a number of people have had issues with the AF360FGZ and I'm wondering if mine needs to be sent back.

I'm using it along with the K10D...it seems to be working fine but the effective flash range indicator does not appear on the LCD. This is the case in every mode.

Anyone have a similar issue?

Thanks.

As far as I can remember the range will only show up when the metering is enabled on the camera (because the range is dependant on the aperture used).

But I'll double check on the K10D, AF360 and AF540 later...

If the flash head is showing 'bounce', the range scale disappears.

Peter was right. I always bounce flash so I didn't even set the head in normal position to see if that's what it was.

Thanks again!

Don't forget that the 360 doesn't cater for the digital crop factor, something the 540 does do.

Oh yes it does (In true panto chant!)
It just doesn't have a "Digital" setting when choosing the format. When you use the AF360 on the hotshoe it correctly indicates the focal length on the zoom.

For example, a 16-45mm lens will show "16" to "48" on the AF360 (which corresponds to an angle of view of 24 - 70 in old money). Note that the AF360 has a maximum wide angle view of 24mm in film, which corresponds to 16mm on digital. The maximum zoom setting of the AF360 in film terms is 85mm, which is somewhere around 55-58mm in digital. Putting a longer lens will correctly show that as the maximum zoom extension on the flashgun.

What confuses most people is they expect to see some "converted" value on the AF360 - it's just reporting the actual focal length (which doesn't change) and is correctly adjusting its angle of view to match the digital format.

When using the AF360 in wireless mode, you have to work to the 35mm film zoom angles of view - which isn't normally a problem anyway as you're usually not pointing in exactly the same direction as the lens, so you just guess and work it out.

Hope that clears it up!
(TBH, it took me a couple of years to get to grips with what was going on, but trust me, it's 100% correct )

Matts quite right

I've used my AF360 up to 400mm zoom and it works a treat.

I don't mind how it does it but it's fine. Now if I can just get it to go up to 1/500s my nearly shot would have worked

Hi Roger,

Red eye reduction's there for a reason you know..

You're right, that's not far off the shot.

Cheers

Funny really red eye reduction doesn't work with owls - see post on Kenya to come later with a proper shot.

Just used the above one to show that 400mm with 360 flash at 30ft does work and it works out the zoom properly
