Both our K20Ds were quite sharp enough, but not so sharp that they looked unnatural. More sharpening can be applied in Photoshop if required.

The enemies of sharpness are more likely to be down to lenses, camera shake or depth of field problems.

Indeed, I found the K20D far more demanding than the K10D as regards the quality of lenses used, hence I have a selection of primes.

I was a bit disappointed with the sharpness of the K20D. I managed to tweak it up a bit through the camera settings, and had to work with my lenses to get the best lenses for the job. I would have rather had a camera which produced sharp images and if you wanted softer ones you would then tweak the sharpness down. I think it is far easier to soften up a sharp image than sharpen up a soft image. All in all the image with the K20D is very satisfactory. I love supersharp pictures though.

But I am seriously considering changing to a Canon. Ohh but the costs of changing. Especially now that the value of DSLR's without video are dropping very fast.
With all respect, you need to learn a bit about how sensors and the eye work and realise that artificial sharpening added after the fact is just that... a trick to increase local contrast and fool the eye into seeing edge detail. I prefer a camera that does no such thing without me telling it to.

True sharpness is down to:
a) holding the camera steady
b) holding the subject steady
c) having enough depth of field to cover the zone you want in focus
d) having a fast enough shutter speed
e) having a sharp enough lens

It has nothing to do with Canon versus Pentax. If you cannot get a sharp image with the K20D you cannot get a sharp image with any camera and it is not the tool you should be blaming.

"Many digital photographers do over-sharpen their images"

Agree 100%, in fact I think the majority of digital users over-sharpen. There seems to be a massive interest in sharpness and little in other image aspects; is colour fidelity not important? or contrast? or EV range? etc etc.

At the NEC show earlier this year on the RPS stand there was a display of shots from a member showing his ARPS (I believe) panel of the entry...the shots were all horribly over sharpened, they were terrible.

I had problems with some older Sigma lenses and the autofocus. Sharpness is very acceptable now after buying new pentax lenses. Havent yet tried to calibrate the autofocus, with the particular lense. I have got the focus card though. Probably sharpness is OK, or I would have taken the trouble to go further.

Sad to see it go, but makes room for an eventual upgrade to the K5 or the K4?
