iris photography

I've just bought a pentax optio 550 hoping the super macro mode would be suitable for my purposes of taking detailed photo's of the human iris. However I can't seem to get a clear photo. Does anyone have any experience of this? What settings would be most suitable - it can't seem to focus on the iris fibres themselves.
Also, is it supposed to make an irregular whirring grinding sound whilst in the macro modes?
