iPad or iPad Which One?

This is not a gadget trying to replace a laptop, as anyone who has seen the keynote will know, so any comparisons to laptops are, in my eyes, pointless. It's a gadget to enjoy content on, that has other advantages, designed to go in a gap between a smart phone and a laptop, simple as that. If that isn't what you need, then look elsewhere.
Well, that's just it. In reality, it will, I think, be competing with laptops for people who want a mobile email / browsing / other experience that they can take out of the house with them; one that will provide a bigger screen and (presumably, or at least hopefully) a more usable keyboard than (say) a Blackberry or an iPhone, or a Nokia Internet tablet.

That particular niche is, currently, squarely the domain of the netbook or the laptop. In that respect then, it's only fair to point at that the iPad, while it might become the latest cool toy to have for many, has real limitations in comparison to other, equally portable devices.

The best thing I can think to say about it is that its screen is proportionately large in comparison to its overall size, but even then the touch screen 'soft' keyboard will take up a large chunk of screen real estate when in use.

Against that, it doesn't have a physical keyboard, it has a much less useful range of applications than a laptop can offer, and even the browser is compromised by an inability to run Flash apps, though that will change at some point I imagine.

I also suspect it will be more expensive even than a 3G-enabled netbook, but we'll have to wait and see.

personally, I think it sucks.

But I build robots, I edit photos and video. I master multiple websites. I create music.

I burn dvd's

I need a computer, and do things with a computer that makes other geeks go "how the hell did he do that?"

it is not for me.

My wife is blonde. 'nuff said.

It is for her.
She loves books. she teaches developementally handicapped kids.
She has wrecked 5 vehicles from not changing oil, to putting on her left signal when she meant right...

She wants to show off our photo or video work, message the kids and download the latest church podcast and her favorite books.

sadly, I will have to buy it for her... the good news is IU'll get to keep her macbook for me!
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

Don,

I think the very first e-books you should get for her iPad, are "Car Maintenance for Blondes" and "Driving for Blondes". It may save you some money in the long run to invest in computers and photo equipment with a beer at the end of the day. It might be worth a try.

I didn't actually get the hump. Neither did I refer, even by implication, to all the Mac users on this forum.
I'm glad you didn't get the hump, as I don't really think you're incompetent. I was simply seeing how you'd react to being insulted by a stranger on the internet.

This was the Mac comment from you that I found quite insulting. It seems to apply to every Mac user who has contributed to this thread (at least 4 or 5 of us I believe). Do you not think it was rather rude?

The vast majority of laptop screens are not designed for colour accurate work, so to try and knock the iPad for not being good to show photos, (which is what it is designed for!!!) seems silly. Thank you Danny but most was all ready discussed and you only picked out lines and didn't put it into his content. All in all it's your point of view against mine, nothing more nothing less without a real right or wrong besides the thing that I said where wrong and I said I stood corrected by that. No need to pull out old cows out of the ditch.

If the OS of the iphone is a tweaked down of the OSX code then why can it not run OSX programs, in that content I was talking about that but you gave it another meaning.

So what they wrote about batteries here is not true?

Well the funny thing is no one knows at this point for us living in the EU that is.
There are question being asked how the End User License Agreement is being presented to End Users and if it's viable.
The EULA is seen as general term of use and those are only viable if the are showed to the users before they buy it, and at present they aren't.
The field that comes up when installing where you need to check the box that you agree with the EULA is not viable in court because of this, so you can truly not read it and just check the box that you agree since it has no value.
At least in the Netherlands and Germany, don't know for sure about the rest of the EU but I think we have all roughly the same law about this.

Yes as an example that somebody said that, at least that's how I read it and it looks like you suggested that since all is in one line.

Also if you can exaggerate things and use wrong facts then why is it so wrong that somebody else does it, since you take quite some offence it seems with the things I said.

Stefan, my point is, that quite often, you (and many others) just don't 'get it'

Find a negative, fixate at on it, berate the whole product, seems to be a popular mantra.

With all gadgets, it's not what it can do, but what it can do well, and how it would fit into your life that becomes important. Not a lot of companies 'get it' either in that respect

Beta v VHS has been mentioned, Beta was the better product, VHS won. Reason:- Content

HD-DVD v Blu Ray, can argue which is 'better' all day long, Blu Ray wins. Reason - Content

You keep going on about how one product has better sound than an iPod. iPod 'wins' (I say wins, it has more than 75% of music player sales) Reason - Content (of the legal variety), ease of use, complete ecosystem, design.

Various consoles have failed in the past, think 3DO, Dreamcast and others, all very good products technically but all failed. Reason - Content

Apps have been available on mobile phones for well over 10 years now, yet the iPhone has 98% of the mobile app market. Reason - Content mainly, but also a complete ecosystem to make it easy to buy and install them.

Yes, there are other reasons other than content that are important, the chief one being marketing, but content is king, and it is content that is the main reason for the iPad, and it is what it does very well.

The main debate over the iPad is those that 'get it' and those that don't. Already owning an Apple product makes it a lot easier to 'get it' as you will know where their strengths lie and who they are targeting and how the whole ecosystem knits together. I'm not trying to say that's it's perfect, there are in fact a few things I don't like, for example, no flash support, no widescreen for video, no iChat camera (think that could be a killer app personally) and as I've said , I'm not going to buy one. Heck I even refused to buy the 1st gen iPhone because I thought they were really taking the piss by not making it 3G!

I know I picked on you a bit here Stefan, and I do apologise if I've offended you, but this was aimed at all those that just don't 'get it', after all how many times do we have to defend our choice of DSLR against those that just don't 'get it'??

Don't worry Danny, we Dutch can take a lot by nature and we are short to the point as long as you don't put words in our mouths that we didn't said you can go a long way.
And I also picked on you and asked for it
And yes I do get it but somehow you don't get me

Well it's easy to be negative and all in all I only stated my vision of the product and everyone said it isn't like that and yes I know but therefore I can still wished and hope it was like that.
The packaging, the styling and form for example are very good of the product and I don't see why they couldn't make a laptop that fits in the same housing and that was where I mostly talked about and that the iPad didn't feed my needs and that I don't see it would feed the needs of many more.

Some see it as an huge iPhone for indoors and a multimedia device designed for video outdoors and a good device to read your email on and surf the web and yes it's fine for that and I didn't deny that, all I said is that the use besides that is limited and that for work it cut sort with a laptop and that that might be the point the device breaks on because they miss the commercial market with it.

There are linux versions that can run on ARM processors so it might not take long before we see a dual boot option for the iPad and then things might get interesting.
You've the quick access and easy UI for when on the road or if you want to look at your email fast and you can start up linux when it's docked with a mouse and keyboard so you can do your work on it.

Unlocker wrote:

That's something else, it's the iPod thing and nobody wanted to miss out the potential market.
Also I don't see what content has to do with the app market, I'm sorry for that.

Also where did you find that number, 98%, and what's the content off that 98%?
Also you can put it into another meaning like that you need those apps for your iPhone simply because it does not support it out of the box if you don't know the content of the apps that are used.
Also when I look at the apps they offer I've my question marks with many of them and the true usefulness if you mean that with content then it isn't so much in my eyes.

I've an HTC and all I installed is coreplayer a music player that support a lot of formats and tomtom.
Besides that out of the box Words, excel and another one was installed out of the box, Opera web browser (with flash support :wink and PDF viewer. That's all someone would need right?

Who “gets” the iPad can only be constructively discussed on a personal basis, hinging solely on whether we individually perceive a need that the device can fulfil.

Whether the market as a whole will get it on a scale commensurate with past iBranded consumer accessories is a matter of pure speculation. However, fashion and the cool factor have undeniably played a key role in past successes, and given the notorious variability of the market it is clearly naive in the extreme to suppose that Apple have some kind of formulaic magic touch that ensures the iPad will also be a massive hit.

However, one thing I find interesting and possibly highly significant with the recent spate of iPad parodies is their generally high-quality production. Much of this looks polished and very professional, which suggests that the growing backlash against Apple’s draconian DRM policies I have recently been casually detecting are indeed gaining traction amongst their traditional heartland of digital professionals.

Combine this with Apple’s slap in face to America’s fine pornography industry through the iPad’s absence of flash support and suddenly their market foundation starts to look very wobbly.

No. It wasn't pointed at anyone in this thread in particular, and certainly not every contributing Mac user.

An Apple victim, in lonegroover parlance, is someone who falls prey to Apple's marketing to the point where they believe that Apple makes the best possible computer / phone / MP3 player / whatever, their competitor products are pale imitations (or in some cases, they aren't aware that competitor versions exist) and they just have to have one, whatever it costs, because (for example) a Sony MP3 player just wouldn't be an iPod. It wouldn't be cool to have one of those.

Unlocker, that's a good point about content. I hadn't really given the content side much thought - other than being peripherally aware of the deals Apple are pursuing with the big publishing houses - but I think you've nailed it. I could get used to the idea of having my magazine and newspaper subscriptions delivered to the iPad and managing it all through itunes. I read something today as well talking about iTunes digital subscriptions from the US comic book market.

Stefan the 98% thing is from a recent Gartner Research survey, see here. Beware, some frighteningly large numbers in that link

Lonegroover, I've spent several pages trying to convert Stefan even though I knew it was probably futile, I don't have the energy to begin again with you However - if you are interested - Stefan made virtually the same point as you about people falling prey to Apple's marketing, and I responded several pages back.
