This aspect seems to be forever ignored. Perhaps because it is rather subtle.

For me the differnces between 135 format and APS-C is too small and i rather have a smaller lighter kit then gaining that little bit more quality.
I would go all the way and get a medium format and keep the APS-C as light versatile travel kit.

Yes this for me is the crux ..... will, not necessarily the improvement in quality, but the difference in output be worth it ? I love working with narrow DoF and that is why I'm so tempted.

I've handled the gorgeous 645D, but to be realistic .... i would be murdered in my bed if my wife saw me drop that kind of cash on the 645D & lenses ! So it's really out of the question as I wouldn't want a non-digital MF camera.

I did toy with the idea of buying a 2nd brand over my 2nd body.

However that entails the non-compatibility of lenses.

I ended up buying a 2nd k-5 for my 2nd Body and I know that was the best decision for me. I haven't got to think when snapping. everything is the same.


If I ever do experiment with a 2nd brand it will be certainly Nikon. Even my Canon shooting buddy agrees with that

I like shallow DOF as well but with the lenses i've now that urge is quite satisfied.
You have the Sigma 50-150 f/2.8 and some very nice primes so i doubt you really need it but that it's more a matter of wanting... Would a nice FA77 or FA*85 not be a better investment then jumping ship?

The MF will hopefully come one day but it won't be the 645D, i find it too slow... i'll wait for a faster version.

Totally agree. I haven't been doing enough shooting recently to justify upgrading to a K5, so I can't comment on that, but I prefer the IQ of the K10D, and even the *ist D, to that of the K20D. Of course, the last is a better camera in many other ways than the first two, so that is what I generally use, but I don't believe that CMOS is better than CCD in terms of pure image quality.

Smeggy - yes I've thought about the non-compatibility of lenses but it's easy enough to get adapters for those I'd really like to give a go on FF (43, VL50, the Taks). I could never see me giving up the K5 and I'm sure subsequent iterations are going to be even better .... but there is something different, special, about FF shots with quality lenses.

Stefan - CBA ? Maybe For the K5 I am looking at getting the Viv S1 85/1.4, no AF and maybe not quite as good as the FA*85 but then it's around a $1,000 cheaper - which is almost the price of a used D700 here (US$1,000 - 1,500).

I've BBG now... I've the same amount of bags then i've lenses...

I'm sure the Viv will be great.
I've the Voigtlander 125mm f/2.5 very high on my list...

Though I have been very happy with the K20D IQ I think things changed with the K-x/K-7. There is something not quite so precise about the images off that sensor.

Consider the FA77 which is the improved A*85mm. Despite the similar optical formula it has been reduced from 555g and 66mm in length to 270g and 48mm. One pays only a half stop for this pleasure.
