Could it be the mechanism that resets the frame counter?

I don't know what it does but it is there on mine too so I would leave well alone.

Mr. Gartmore is absolutely correct.
All the crank wind film cameras have the counter reset located there.

Inside the back cover of my MX, in the right hand side of the top groove (where the cover and case snap together) there is a small spring-type bit of metal protruding (brass coloured). I have proded it and it seems quite secure, not like it's about to snap off or fall out. And the back cover does close properly with no light-leaks. Just wanted to know if this thing is meant to be there or not!!
