ive loaded the wrong black and white - right eye should be the sharp one but you get the idea

Lighting looks nice and soft, maybe move the subject a bit further from the window for even softer light. I think the aperture used is a bit wide, F4 or so would get both eyes sharp, it all depends on the background and how far away / distracting it is. Personally, I would prefer less tightly cropped images than this if they are for family portraits, but I might be off the mark with this as I don't know what style of shot they would like.
Other than that, I think you know what you are doing Alistair, just go with your instinct and don't try something you're not comfortable with.

Love the colour one probably because it's closer to her and she looks happier, it's also more flattering to the lady. Thanks for shareing we can all learn from one another.

Much prefer the colour one.
I'd crop some off the top and would have taken it with a longer focal length standing further back ( if you've room )

Its ok shooting strangers but when someone asks you to do it and theres money involved! Yikes
