In the Snow with a K5

Snow covered Durham for the past few days. I'm sure my photo club friends grabbing scenes on the picturesque river banks. I looked for something different as Britains's railways struggled to keep going through the storms.....

Well they certainly are a bit different dont think I like the bright red tail lights though, they look like they've been stuck on later.

First shot gets a big thumbs up despite the red blobs

OK Alan, I've toned down the tail lamps.

No noise Ken, just a deathly hush as the snow fell. Thanks for the comment Ken and John.

I was tempted to wipe the monitor screen David, the snow adds a real essence to your images.

Thomas and his friends would not have been happy!

Some great images David! Now when they say trains are delayed at least we will know why, instead of the reason being "there are leaves on the track"

I like getting the freight through, was it going fast as to me it looks like it's thundering through that snow!
I reckon the freight train was doing 50-60mph. I really wanted one of the high speed trains wizzing past at about 90mph (that's the limit at Durham) so I could get a real swirl of blown snow, but it didn't happen while I was there. I shall try again.

I have to say David, you are really dedicated to your photography, going out in that. I did not leave the house. Favorites are: Getting the freight through and the revised tail lights

Excellent. There's be proud of that stuff in Sweden. I like the first best with the splashes of colour through the blizzard (untoned down version).

Very interesting David!

2nd one for me, the two passing trains in the snow add something special. The perspective is freaking me out though, are we looking down a hill at the trains? Do trains go up and down hills? What is that staircase-looking thing in the top left?

I like 3 as well, the angle of the train is great. But the extremely sharp branches to the right of the train make the front of the train look a bit soft (I'm not sure if it is or not! )

I wasn't looking up or down a hill although the line through Durham is on a slight gradient southwards. I was standing on the station platform. Any apparent softness on the front of the freight train is probably due to the speed it was travelling. The staircase effect on the left is caused by the roofs of terraced houses, they are on a steep hill next to Durham Viaduct. The trains are leaning because of the super-elevation of the track on the curve off the viaduct.
