In-Camera focus bracketing - how difficult would it be?

An old pump up Flit Fly Spray would look nice!
Edit: For anyone who doesn't know what a Flit Fly Spray is here's a link click on
the photo (from the days before aerosols) link
It was far more effective if you just hit the fly over the head with it!

I don't dislike the images as such, they are sharp, but I do dislike the OTT background colours. The two do go together. It's got nothing whatsoever to do with the K-5 or anything else, it's just about the images.
The second one looks unnaturately sharp and much like a SEM image would look. That's neither a like or dislike, just an observation.
They leave me a bit neutral to be honest.

Focus bracketing will help to produce focus stacked images, but I think moving the whole camera and lens or subject, without adjusting focus on the lens produces slightly better results.
For that, some sort of macro rail or linear stage is required, or a very steady hand.
I'd love to have a play with a StackShot rail.

Interesting pictures, but horrible backgrounds. The second looks fmore like a SEM image than a photograph.
The backgrounds look fine to me. What is it you don't like about them?
There's even a PU interview with Thomas Shahan who practices exactly this sort of macro photography:

This article has now unfortunately been moved behind the pay wall, but there is another interview with Thomas here. One of Thomas' photos also graced the cover of the PU magazine, so it can't be the minority activity you make it out to be - can it?
