image re-size

I’m becoming confused about changing the size of images in Pentax Digital Camera Utility 4.
The choice of image size and image resolution is confusing.
What size in pixels ? what size in mm for resolution and do I need 72 or 300dpi ?
I need images for e-bay and e-mail.
I have been shooting in raw on my KX and resizing by 50%
Any help appreciated.
Regards
Chris

For the internet etc think of size in pixels e.g. 600 pixels long for the gallery here. That would also be a decent size for ebay although sometimes I go up to about 1000 pixels.

The resolution is then academic as the image will always display at the screen resolution - 72dpi usually - no matter what resolution you save at.

In photoshop my resizing drill is: 1 - resize to 600 pixels along the longest edge. 2 - Use the unsharp mask filter to restore sharpness lost during the resizing process. 3 - Save as high quality jpeg.

dpi (Dots Per Inch) has nothing to do with pixel size, it's how close the inkt dots are together when you print an image.
72ppi (Pixel Per Inch) is roughly the standard pixel density for most monitors.
Non of those are really important when you resize so just ignore them.

Still getting my head round resizing and image size.
I have found that images I upload to photobucket are degraded, I didn't realise the resize process affects sharpness
I am not using photoshop, is there any other way round it:

So what exactly are you trying to do? are you pulling photos from your camera and shrinking them down? or are you enlarging photos to put on ebay?

if enlarging you will of course get some pixelation, but shrinking you shouldn't really. Are you making sure that you are keeping the aspect ratio the same? for example, if you shoot in 6x4 you cant resize an image to 6x5 or it will be stretched and distorted.

Chris - try the FastStone programmes - Resizer and Viewer. Both free for home use. Easy to use, stable and very effective - so all round v good value.

If you're on XP you can download the Microsoft PowerToy Image Resizer.

It integrates with the 'File' menu and the 'right click' on an image menu and has basic and advanced functions.

Scroll down to near the bottom of the page and look for ImageResizer.exe on the right hand side of the page.
