Ensure batteries are fully charged or the camera is connected to a mains adapter. Insert card. Switch on camera.

There is a readme text file downloaded with the fimware update. Once the battery is fully charged and the new firmware copied to the root directory of the SD card, switch off the camera, insert the card then switch on the camera while holding down the menu button. You will be shown the versions firmware on the screen and asked if you wish to update. Using the four way controller navigate to "Yes" then press the ok button. Follow the progress on screen until it shows update complete - the orange light continues to flash. Switch off the camera. Job done.

from what i can see the firmware is only an update for large capacity cards, if thats the case no need to update if your not intent on useing the cards.

From what Pentax have decided to disclose the firmware is only an update for large capacity cards. It's not unheard of for them to slip in the odd bug fix that they decide to not disclose.from what I can see the firmware is only an update for large capacity cards, if that's the case no need to update if your not intent on using the cards.
Upgrading firmware is always to be recommended unless doing so removes features that you use a lot of the time or potentially causes other issues, like the SDM issue when the K10D was first given the facility (I think).

I seem to remember that once you have put the card in the camera and told it to update , there is a warning not to touch the camera till it tells you it has finished the update process.

Absolutely spot on unless you want to turn it into a toaster.

Did I read somewhere that its not just high speed cards that the firmware addressees but battery issues as well ?

The battery matters were (officially) the subject of the previous fix.

So a new K-x should be sorted with regards to the battery issue ?

It's unlikely. So a new K-x should be sorted with regards to the battery issue ?
AFAIK all Pentax cameras are shipped with the original firmware version. The exception is special models like the K10D Grand Prix which had the latest firmware of the time installed from new.
It's easy to check which firmware is installed. With power off, press and hold the menu button, then power on the camera. The firmware version will be displayed on the rear screen.
If you have a new firmware in the root directory of the SD card you will also get the option to update it.
