I want to do this ... which lens please?

I love this image:

This is a 16-35mm lens on a 5D at 17mm. That's a FF camera sooo, am I looking at a 11-12ish mm on the K-7 sensor? The fisheye 10-17?

I know the picture was taken in the future. Probably by the man arrested near the large hadron collider.

Yes, you're looking at 11-12mm taking the crop factor into account.
Not the 10-17mm fisheye though, the focal length is misleading on a fisheye, the actual angle of view will be much wider than the equivalent "normal" lens.

If I remember correctly, 17mm on the fisheye has roughly the same angle of view as the 12-24mm at 12mm. I'm sure I tested it once.
Of course the fisheye will still have a great deal of distortion at 17mm, whereas the 12-24mm will have very little even at its widest.

The 10-17mm is a fantastic lens, but for the image you referenced you have 3 options; Pentax 12-24mm, Sigma 10-20mm (there are 2 versions of this lens) or Tamron 10-24mm. Actually there is a 4th option, which is buy a 5d & 16-35mm lens a tad expensive though.

Would I be right in thinking there are 1500 or so good reasons why I won't be taking option 4.

What precise meaning of "save" are we talking about here? Save me money rather than shelling out for a 5D and lens? "Save" me until it arrives?

I think my pockets are deep enough for a Sigma/Tamron wide.

Save as in not spending any money at all on a lens waiting for the DA*11-16 that might never come.

As for the 5D, why on earth would you want a Canon, I would rather go for the Nikon D700 at least they handle a bit like Pentax.
Also if you can spend that much why not a 645D?

Purely out of interest Stefan, which model Pentax handles like a D700?

In that case, absolutely.

For the record, the D700 handles very similarly to the K10 and K20. It was only curiosity, to find out if you had handled a D700 (after plenty of steroids).

Enough, enough. I can't wait for ever. I don't want vapourware. I don't want a 5D (grits teeth). 645D, D stands for dreaming.

My sights are set on either Sigma/Tamron wide. Either that or a 17-50mm.
I have two shoots in mind for a wide but I'd use the 17-50mm most of the time.

Time to save the money and flip a coin.

Yes a week ago in the studio of the photo-club, the man in charge use a D700 with a Nikon 70-200 so gave it a spin. Wonderful combination but out of my price league at the moment and I would probably take the step to the 645D instead.

I'll get the Z-1 out and put my FAJ18-35mm on and try in mono.

Where would I rent a 12-24mm?
