Nothing bad about that a good choice. Used one for several years now with good results using Permajet FB Baryta papers and Ilford prestige Gallery

You'll enjoy it I'm sure.
I use an old Pixma IX5000 which is not technically a photo printer but the results are consistently excellent, it clogs/dries out far less than the Epsons I've owned previously and just seems to go on and on and on (I've been looking for an excuse to replace it for a few years now).
You'll get a variety of advice on Printer Inks - if you're intending to print tons and aren't too bothered about the longevity of the prints then OEM inks will probably do, but if you're going to be selective about what you print and intend to mount/frame/display (and why wouldn't you) then the Canon inks are excellent.
Paper - well you'll need to experiment to see what suits you, personally I use Ilford Galerie in A3+ size (it's not much more than A3 pricewise and you can trim to suit anyway) - the type of paper will depend on your printers ink type, so check that out carefully first.
Enjoy

It kinda is really, especially with a replacement unused print head + inks. Won't actually arrive for a couple of weeks as it is in Sligo and will stay in a friends office until he comes down or I go up, hence I can do paper / ink research (or pick the collective brains of the forum )

One question regarding usage, I believe that there is a setting that shakes up the inks every 60 hours or so if not used. Would i be able to get away with an A4 or smaller print every couple of days?

Hi, i've used one of the Canon Mg6250 photo printer/scanners for some years. Using it as a general purpose printer as well as a six ink photo printer keeps it working. i believe if you leave on standby all Canon machines clean regularly but use a lot of ink doing so. I've read once a month is the minimum use to avoid problems. I use cheap pattern cartridges that cost around a pound each off Amazon with no problem.

I have gotten myself a printer. A Canon Pixma Pro-10 that I found in one of those local advert sites for €200 with a spare printhead and set of Canon inks.
Any recommendations on paper types or manufacturers?
