I have just bought a Pentax MG

Looking on ebay for a nice ME Super, I came across the above camera - unlike the ME Super it's aperture priority only, no DOF preview, no exp. compensation (although it does have a manual ISO wheel, which would do the same thing), smaller and less accurate viewfinder.

Despite all this, I bought it for thirty quid - because the description said it came with an f1.2 50mm SMC-M lens!

However, after the reckless excitement of the auction, it seems probable that the listing was inaccurate, and the lens was actually only an f2

Should I try and 'void' the sale, or have I actually bought a camera which is worth having?

The MGs tend to go for around £30. In my opinion, even an F2 lens in good condition is worth £30 so you still got a free camera.

As you say, it is Av only but you can change the exposure by playing with the ISO. I had a couple of these. The usual problem is with the mirror locking up and refusing to come back down.

As long as it works, enjoy it. Run some film through it and have fun.

I have and have used an MG, not bad little cameras, very similar to the earlier ME.

As has been said the lens is worth it alone so try it out and play.

Well the camera is extremely clean, metering is spot on, it's easy to tweak the ISO, and it's pretty. So it's a keeper!

I have had one for about twenty years. The exposure compensation on the MG works as follows:

Pull and lift the rewind knob gently to the stop. This will reveal the exposure compensation dial underneath. Do not pull further or the camera back will open.
Lift and move the ASA setting dial to the red + or - markings on the revealed exposure dial for the amount of compensation you require.

Push the rewind knob back home.

The exposure compensation dial really only tells you which way to turn the ASA setting dial - anticlockwise for more exposure, clockwise for less exposure, looking from the top at the camera.

If you know which way to turn the ASA setting dial anyway, then just lift and turn it for the setting you want, without going through the above procedure.

Don't forget to set it back to the normal film ASA/ISO rating after you have taken the compensated exposure.

Lenses are commonly described as, for example 1:2 This means that the lens is f2 max aperture. Can be misinterpreted as f1.2

My Tokina Pentax fit lens is engraved "24mm 1:2.8" ie 24mm focal length f2.8

My Pentax Std lens "1:1.7 50mm" (came with the ME Super)

My Pentax Std lens "1:2 50mm" (came with the MG).
