This is the Currys price on the Samsung, and they aren't known for being particularly competitive on price:

So £699 for GX20 with kit lens, £899 for K20D with kit lens.

£200 difference is just too much in this price range, nearly 30% more!

£699 for K20D body only? That would make a lot more sense to me with the GX20 kit at that price.

I agree. I would also expect the difference to increase as prices (slowly) drop.

I discussed with Pentax and I personally think, as a shopper, i wouldn't pay more than £50, even if i was a reaaaall big fan of the more expensive brand.

Their answer was 'The K10D was £100 more than the GX10 and it done ok!'

Ben, may I ask who you spoke to at Pentax UK? Also, nobody asks "Why is Samsung cheaper than PENTAX?"

Yes, the GX-10 was £100 cheaper than the K10D, but it had to be as Samsung has no SLR heritage and they need to buy their market share; even then whilst PENTAX was ranked consistently as the number 3 in the SLR market Samsung could only reach a volume share of 0.9%.

There has been no official word from Samsung either over the price of the GX20.

This whole issue is not a case of Pentax being greedy and demanding more for the honour of having the brand name on the camera, but one of the fact that they wanted to release the camera with a fair SRP.

The fact that Samsung have released their SLR and prices are suspected to be £00's cheaper is to do with the fact that Samsung are a massive consumer electronics giant who can afford to sell a product at a loss or for a very minimal profit in order to buy a place in the market.

If they were the same camera, then I'd say £100 was a bit steep. But the Samsung equivalents do not seem to get the same level of support from 3rd party raw convertors. For this reason, I'd stick with Pentax. IIRC, the Samsung doesn't do DNG format either, does it?

Actually, the Samsung does do DNG - it's PEF that Samsung doesn't do.

Interestingly I'm just back from Focus today - K20D available £749 body only as a "show special" and £899 with the 16-45 which I thought was a great deal...

No sign of anywhere with the GX20!!!

I voted that they should be the same price, give or take a few quid - BUT I will pay more for the Pentax badge.
