How do you do It

I have just spent the last 3 days reading the manual for Adobe Photoshop CS2. This book tells you how to turn on and off each and every function that it has but it does not give examples of how they are used or when they need to be used. Does anyone have any recomended reading that might explain how to do different things.

One of the things I need to learn how to do is insert another photo. As an example, A senior portrait of an individual that played football, basketball, and soccer. In your minds eye create a Traditional Portrait, a youngster clad in suit and tie. then across the bottom of the pic smaller pic of him playing his favorite activities.

The same process could create another photo that has the subject playing the sport, and the traditional pose located some where in the pic.

Does this technique have a name?

Maybe you have the knowledge to explain this to me, if you do please keep it simple as I have only ben digitized about 4 months LOL.

I think collage would come close to what you want.

I would simple open the main photo and the rest of the photos and drag the ones that goes under it to the main photo then the dragged photo will apear in a layer and with the free transformation tool you can alter his size.
Simply do crtl left click on the layer I can and you select everything in the layer, then right click on your selection > free transformation.

If you want extra room under the main photo go to image > canvas size there you can create some more room.

I can recommend "Adobe Photoshop for Photographers" by Martin Evening. There are versions for CS2, CS3 and CS4. Some of the stuff is pretty advanced and I have to admit to not having used the book much myself but at least it explains real world situations and how and why you would use the tools.

I agree with the recomendation of Martin Evening's book, though I would dip in and out for the specific things you want to do. As it is quite heavy going to read cover to cover.
