Hello

I have two M42 lenses, the lens should have an apeture ring on which you select the apeture manually.

On my K10d I needed just to enter the set up menu and set it to allow the camera to be used with the apeture ring manually - sadly I can't remember the exact term, the camera is at home and i am in work so I cannot check.

Once you select the apeture just press the ael button (if using digital)and the camera will set the exposure - correctly most of the time just keep an eye on your histogram if using digital.

On the K10D if you use the shake reduction you need to enter the focal length one benefit of which is that the camera will record the focal length in the exif data.

Enjoy.

Hey Joseph,
I have an *istD permanently dedicated to M42 lenses - I have eight or nine at last count - I just use the Manual/Auto select on the SMC Taks and the earlier Pre-Set Taks do not have a pin.On all the lenses aperture can be controlled by the lens ring as required in Manual or Green setting,P,Tv or Av.

Hope this helps

Regards

Tony

If your lens doesn't have an auto/manual switch then yes, you will need to stop the pin from springing out again. Some people use glue for this, or there is also a special M42-PK adapter you can get which pushes the pin in (Cardiff_Gareth has just ordered one of these, see here).

the lens i have is a tokina .ther is a springloaded pin, looking down onto the base of the lens it protrudes through the face of the thread .it has to be puhed in to allow the apeture ring to work otherwise apeture is wide open, i assume it should come into contact with a face or something as you screw it in but on the k7 there is nothing for it to make contact with

it's the auto-stop down pin which allowed cameras to stop the lens down automatically at exposure time, meaning the photographer could focus with the lens wide open. There was a moving plate inside the throat of compatible M42 cameras so that the camera could push the pin in when the shutter fired.

Most M42 lenses with this feature have a switch for Auto/Manual operation. If this is present, set it to manual and the aperture ring will work. If there is no switch, you'll need to jam the pin with something.
you don't have to be mad to post here

but it does help

Sorry, perhaps I wasn't being very clear, but I thought I had addressed this in the message above yours

Attaching a small, filed-smooth fragment of CD (use those free AOL ones) using loctite works much better (and is less likely to fail at some future point) than simply superglueing the pin itself in my experience

Apologies,

I was limited by time earlier, my error for rushing.

However, now there is more info I can give a better answer but may not really add anything to the above.

I have a Tokina 300 f5.5, it has this pin, the apeture ring does not operate the apeture unless it is set to manaul so all I do is leave it on manual and attach it to my m42 to k adapter and it works perfectly on my k10d.

Cheers
