How do I take B & W pictures?

Ny camera is a K5.

I like to take some B&W pictures, but I can not find any way of doing this.
I had a look in the digital filter settings under "Extract colour", but I can not disable the brown colour in the No1 setting. The No2 setting has an off position, but not the No1.

I don't really like to do this in Photoshop. I like to go out and take a whole sequence in B&W and not have to fiddle around after.

Anybody knows how?

P 197 of your manual offers you a alternative method. Nowhere near as good as doing it in Photoshop or some other prorgramme afterwards though.

You need to go into Custom Image. Press the four way controller to the right and a series of options become available, Bright-Natural-Vivid and so on. These include Black and White.

This will only work if you are shooting JPEG.

You are correct Horst, sorry. I was looking at a PDF of the manual - except I opened the K5 ii manual.
I have them both on the computer. Glad John was able to explain it to you.

Do try a PP way of converting to mono though - it will be better than in camera I am sure.

If you use FastStone, click on 'adjust lighting', go to the 'saturation' slider and move it all the way to the left. Having removed all the colour, you are left with a greyscale which you can then tweak by altering the others.

Gwyn's right. If you take a b/w picture in camera then you're stuck with what the software gives you. Take a colour shot and convert it using Photoshop or something and you'll have much more control and a far punchier final image.

Perhaps the ideal setup would be to shoot RAW plus jpeg, with the custom image preset on B & W, (as suggested above)... That way you can see the mono effect on screen as you shoot but you have the RAW file and jpeg to choose from.

There are additional settings in the custom menus for applying colour filters, like red, yellow, orange, just like using real glass filters for film ... This gives extra control over the toning and will help to get the jpeg closer to an ideal output.
