How accurate should the focus point be?
If you set it to centre and then take the picture do you get the same problems? In my experience the automatic function doesn't always pick the correct place to focus on and then gives the problems you describe.
Also try the following link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth_of_field
Or do you mean that the manual selection set on center will actually work differently? Hmmm, I guess I could try.
The first image at that link is somewhat what I was doing, but a bit more depth of field. Using that image as an example, one would expect that the user was probably focusing at or near the bottom half of of the middle line. (1/3 in front 2/3 in back, very roughly)
Instead for me to get the same image, I would need to focus my center point on the bottom of the first line. (1/5 or less in back, 4/5 or more in front).
Your eye needs to be centred exactly in the middle of the viewfinder eyepiece, otherwise you might well get some apparent shift.

FYI, I set up a piece of paper with a distinct design so that it was on an angle to the camera. I simply compared the final image with where I focused. I would expect a bit more behind the central focus point to be in focus than was in front, but it is usually quite the other way around. (and not 1/3 v.s 2/3 but sometimes 1/5 v.s. 4/5 -- based off the true expected center point)
Is that something I just have to live with and adjust for, or do I need to send the camera for adjustment?
