What am I missing by keeping XP Pro?
Honest question as I did not use Vista although the family do have Vista.

The ability to use more than 4Gb of memory should you need it.

Not really though, only the 64bit version can have more then 4gb useful ram. I had XP 64bit which also supported more then 4GB ram.K10D wrote:

Thanks for the info chaps.
Being mobile at the moment, I use a laptop, the wife's ex-Acer Ferrari.
I replaced the HDD and upped the RAM. It has a Radeon 9200 graphics card with dedicated memory. It seems to handle PS 2 and 4 plus most other stuff I use it for.
Images are kept on a set of WD Essential 500Gb pocket portables.
Due to the need to Skype, I bought a Samsung NC10. That works great as a mobile transfer system between card reader and a WD HDD. I can even view the images and its a lot smaller/lighter than the Acer. It also runs four times longer on battery.

They are bringing out a special version of win7 for netbooks just like your samsung, it might be worth trying it out to see if it's better or not.

Did some more research on that and it seems it isn't at all that special, it's simply downgraded version of the full version and with restriction.Anvh wrote:

So it is not specially design for running on netbooks, it's design to be as cheap as it can and so make netbooks even cheaper.
just read a Dutch test and they say it runs just as fast as XP on the samsung NC10 but the startup of win7 is faster and recovering from sleep to and connecting to wireless network also. Although they have 2gb of ram in the machine so lower rams machine might do worse then XP.

I thought K10's question referred to to XP pro. XP64 would be another alternative with the limitation that it may be hard to find drivers for peripherals.Oggy wrote:

Does anyone know whether Open Office will run with W7?

Does anyone know whether Open Office will run with W7?[/quote]Yes but like the way you said it, it seems that any version of Vista or Win7 can have more then 4GB of ram but that isn't the case.
The 32bit version still have the 4gb limitation.
And yes indeed drivers are a problem with XP64, besides that it was an fine system but I wanted to make the point that XP64 also support more then 4GB of ram because it was 64bit.

Can this be switched off? It's not a huge deal though as it's still fast enough.
It's the UAC (User Account Control) that keeps pop-in up.
Here is an explanation how to turn it off link
I would suggest using option 1 or 4 and not use regedit if you don't know what you're doing.
