I've been back and tried some things with a bit more care in the framing to get true symmetry... it was later than last time so the light was on the other side of the structure.
I was also trying the in-camera HDR hand-held, which sort of works but with a 10mm lens the auto-alignment is a bit wayward, since very tiny movements can cause huge differences off-axis.
First of all, a closer one so that there is no sky:
Then one converted to B&W with a boost to contrast and sharpness:
There were others that were better shots for this treatment, but the HDR wasn't giving enough sharpness for it to work.
And finally one with a stronger HDR setting, shooting through a dark arch:
On that last one I'm not keen on the tone mapping gradations at the edge of the blue sky, and the countryside on the left doesn't align properly so is a bit fuzzy. I guess that's the disadvantage of doing it in-camera, you get what you get. On the other hand I couldn't have done a three-shot merge handheld!
I think I'll scrap the HDR stuff and have another go soon.

(1/125, f7.1, ISO 400, 10mm)
(1/50, f6.3, ISO 1600, 13mm, slight crop to remove foreground - it was dark under there, but full sun on each side)
Both on the K-5 + Sigma 10-20mm, where I am finding that 10mm is nowhere near wide enough...
