Hi Dave welcome to the forum

I think the best advice I can offer (and everyone else omitted this) get out as often as possible and experiment, experiment, and experiment some more, the more you use the camera in different modes the better aquainted you will become, OK so you will shoot an awful lot of rubbish and delete 99.9% of it, but it will be fun.

My opinion on the sensor cleaning, it doesnt' work...... not to most peoples expectations at least . After three months my istD sensor was filthy, after six months my K10D sensor only has the odd stubborn speck, now consider that and you decide if it works or not.
