High key bison

This is a crop of a picture I took of a bison whose face was clouded by dust being kicked up by a bull bison nearby.

I have given it a high key b+w treatment. I would be grateful for any c+c on this, especially from the b+w experts on here.

I thinks you did a good job, as a high key mood was intentional.
But.......I think it would work as well as a high contrast B&W because the face would stand out more, while leaving the dusty environment intact.

Would love to see the colour version to see what is possible.

Here is the original, resized from raw to 1000 px wide with no colour/contrast adjustment. I really look forward to your input.

I quite like your version, Peter, though I think a bit more contrast might be nice. I'm keen to see what Martin is going to come up with.

I had a go with it, but after seeing the original I decided to work on the whole picture.
I liked the conjunction with the two bison's to much to crop the right one out. Specially because in mono those diagonal light streaks crossing behind the animals really sings.




I have opened it in LR, tweaked a bit with the contrast from the dust and the foreground to make it stand out more and added some minor split-tone to cool down the shadows and warm up the highlights.
Personally I think by cropping this picture you don't do it full justice.
Anyway....hope you like it,

Yes, I like that, Martin.

But kudos to the original snapper. You can't make a silk purse, etc.

Martin, that was quick. I really like the result. I have a few colour versions of the whole scene which I like too but didn't consider giving them the b+w treatment. but this works very well.

maybe I will have another go at the "close-up"

You are absolutely right, there.

Is that one without any cropping?
Because it's kind of funny that I cropped the edited version almost to the same proportions.

Anyway...I am glad you liked my view on it.

Personally, I think this latest colour one could do with a bit more saturation and contrast. Sort of like Martin's B&W, but in colour.
