Does the K5 perform appreciably better at higher ISO settings, 1600 and above, than previous cameras like the K-X?

Hi Steve. I wouldn't say the K5 performs significantly better than the K-X in terms of ISO, as the K-X was quite a belter at ISO performance when it came out - so not the best comparison to make.

If you compare the K5 with it's previous generation equivalents such as the K7, K20D, K10D, then yes the K5 is miles ahead.

To generalise, I would put the K-x, K-r, K5, K30 & K5II as having closer relations to each other in ISO terms. There is a noticeable jump up from any previous model to the ones mentioned above.

If I was thinking of upgrading from a K-X, better ISO performance wouldn't be anywhere near the top of my list for reasons to upgrade.

Thanks for that Bob.
What features would be near the top of your reasons to upgrade?

Sure, for me it would be:

1) Advanced controls around the body which you get on the likes of a K5, rather than being hidden away in menus on entry level models.
2) Ability to use a battery grip
3) Weather sealing.
4) Resolution
5) Frames per second burst speed.
6) ISO performance.

So, is resolution better on the K5 than the KX?

Thanks,

Steve

Yes, 12MP compared with 16MP. Gives more cropping potential, and if you want to produce very large prints - can be advantageous there.
