Hi and Welcome hope you have a lot of fun with it and get some good shots of your grandchildren
Trust the camera and try some with the flash off Ive got aa K-r and it rarely lets me down exposure-wise ive shot up to ISO 3200 for small prints and it turned out ok, although ideally i'd have been able to lower it. The K-5 is supposed to be even better At higher ISO's

the K-5 is good at higher ISO I have not needed to use the flash yet but I am thinking of getting an off camera flash.

Welcome from another tyke who started on a Zenit E (and still owns 2) Also had several Chinons including a CE4 and 5, CM4 and 5, CP 5 and even a CS.
You will find members here a friendly bunch - and there are several Yorkshire regulars including a couple from Leeds.
Whereabouts in the dales are you heading? - may be able to give you some 'must see' tips that visitors miss

I live between Leeds and York.
Will be based in Middleham for 3 days. Have been up a few times before but always on the look out for new places.
I'm not so far away from you Carl I live in Wetherby and lived in Knaresborough for 6 month in the late 70s.

I am actually in Scotton - probably only about 8 miles up the road from you - so you probably know Middleham area as well as I do. If not - the obvious places to go and see with the camera would include Bolton Castle, Jervaulx Abbey,Thorpe Perrow and of course Aysgarth falls and West Burton falls.
I love Wensleydale, some beautiful scenery and of course being in Middlheam - lots of opportunities to see the race horse trainers out with the horses especially in the early morning. Pity you are not going this week - on Good Friday every year - all of the racing stables are open to the public - they even lay on a free bus service between them.
Have a good trip and come back with lots of images!

Jervaulx abbey is one of my favorite places and west Burton the best of the waterfalls I think. I have stayed in Middleham a few times only once got up early enough to go up to the "gallops". That time I couldn't get close enough to get a photo of horse galloping not sure still how to capture this but hope to get up there and try. Not heard of Thorpe Perrow but having googled it looks like a good place to visit.

Theorp Perrow arboretum is well worth a visit and the entry fee - beautiful gardens and the birds of prey centre is excellent - you can get very close to the birds and there are normally 20+ tethered outside rather than in their cages. The flying displays are spectacular (11.30 and 1.30 every day) and really will test you panning skills if you try to photograph them in flight - and the staff are extremely knowledgeable and friendly.Jervaulx abbey is one of my favorite places and west Burton the best of the waterfalls I think. As it is so close - also worth nipping in to Bedale if you go there - good for shops and some interesting old buildings including St Gregory's church and the Bedale museum is worth a quick look

Welcome there is quite a large yorkshire contingent here.
Keep a look out in the local meets section as there are often Pentax meets in the area with people coming down from Tyneside, Durham and even Scotland. They are good fun and a way of sharing knowledge and trying other peoples kit!
And no its not just old man, partners come along as well.

That sounds good. Will keep a look out. At the moment I dont get out much as I'm a carer for my Mum and only get out when she's in respite. So hopefully there will be a meet I can get to.

I have been interested in photography since I was at collage in the '70 but could never get the technical bits sorted in my head and I still bumble along some what. I started with a Zenith E and the got a Chinon SLR
and then got a pentax 110 which was a cracking little camera (have found some 110 film and recently given it an outing )
A few years ago I was made redundant and decided I'd like to have a go with DSLR I bought a OlympusE510 which I like but bought a 70-300 lens for it which is a good lens but i found it too heavy to use without a tripod.
A friend of mine let me borrow his old K10 and a 70-300 lens to see how I got on with it. Loved it even tho the lens hadnt as long a reach as the olympus one due to the 4/3 thing.
So this is how my kit stands today
Pentax K5
kit lens 18-55
Tamron 70-300 (which my friend let me keep)
pentax DA 1:2.4 35mm
I dont have a favourite style of photography will try anything but I love playing in photoshop and like to use my own images for montage work. Recently I became a granny to twin girls who now have become good subjects. Next week going up to the Yorkshire dales might get a few pics up there.
Looking forward to finding my way around here anf getting to know everyone.
