help please

i hope this is the correct place to ask this, sorry if it is not.

I am moving house and whilst packing came across a camera that was given to my family a while ago, we have no use for it and are thinking about selling it however have no idea what it is worth, i have asked somebody i know who is into photography and they have given me a price however they are interested in buying it however i do not know how much to trust them as they know i have no idea.

The camera itself has ASAHI PENTAX and SP 1000 on it and i have been told it is a

it has a few lenses with it that are in mint condition which have either ASAHI PENTAX or VIVITAR on them and it all comes in a case. (some of the lenses have thier own cases too). i have been told it is a "spotmatic camera with a screw type lens mount "

if anybody could help me out or suggest where else i should ask that would be great

Hello Becky, welcome to the forum.

As a general rule of thumb old cameras are not worth as much as old lenses - I'm not au fait with values on older Pentax equipment but I'm sure there are several on here who will be able to give you a guide price on the body from your description. With regard to the lenses though more information is certainly required. You'll notice that each lens has a series of words and numbers around the front element, for example:

ASAHI OPT. CO. JAPAN SMC PENTAX-M 1:1.4 50mm 7402544

It is this string of letters, words and numbers that will allow us to identify what you have and then give you an accurate valuation. Some old lenses may be worth a couple of pounds, others a few hundred and so it's important to know exactly what you've got there.

Don't expect more than £15 for the lot- less if there is any fungus inside the lenses. At my camera club auction a Canon FTbn with f1.8 lens fetched only £1.
Just thought- isn't there a SCHOOL nearby that would take the gear? I had a phone call the other day from a man who wanted to give away some darkroom gear and put him onto our local school where a member of my Club teaches photography and they were pleased.

I'm a bit more optimistic than Peter, I've just had a quick look at some completed auctions on eBay and I'd estimate the following:

Pentax Spotmatic camera £20-30

28mm Lens £30

135mm Lens £35

55mm Lens £10

The two Vivitar teleconverters would have a negligible value.

This all assumes that the items are in good working order of course. Good luck!

thanks hefty, those prices are more along the lines of what i was told before the camera itself is in good condition and the lenses are all mint

Ebay is the best place to sell them, and you should sell each item separately - few people are likely to want everything.

DON'T say "I know nothing about cameras". This usually means the seller knows the item is broken, and doesn't want to admit it.

But if your contact has offered at least £50.00, I should accept it. It'll save a lot of hassle.

I would agree with the prices exept for the 28mm. A Pentax version would be around £30 but a Paragon is probably only worth about £10 in a private sale.
