A superb lens, lighter than its predecessors, the F and FA models, and has the advantage of quick-shift manual focussing.
Other alternatives are products from Tamron and Sigma. 90mm+ is my recommendation for photographing insects and other bugs.
A good set of extension tubes attached to whatever lens you have will give you a low cost introduction to macro photography.
If you get hooked on it, you'll want the macro lens.

Thanks for the replies - they are a great help.
Ive been taking photo of butterflies today and I think I really need a Macro lens.
I think I will go ahead and order.
