Hello Pete and welcome to the forum and the Pentax family.
With regard to your camera battery dieing was it cold? That alone will reduce the availlable power of the battery, and after a quick warm up they will be fine again.
I liked the picture of your dog in the gallery - it looks like he's just been swimming. However try not to get his ears and toes touching the sides of the picture that will take an edge off of your shots. The Kx will help you in this as its viewfinder only shows 96% of the final frame.

Thanks for the advice on the battery issue Bob.
In fact I put the new Enloop ones in first (on Saturday when I bought the camera) and they died early in the show (on Sunday) so I put the Lithium ones in that came with it and they died too. It was not cold as it was an indoor show - I was concerned that there was a problem with the camera. But now I have updated the firmware the Lithiums are back in and working fine... I also found that if I zoomed in on the image (in playback) and then back out the camera switched itself off, seems odd to me?

I am new to DSLR, in fact new to SLR as I have come from a the Fuji Finepix 9500 zoom camera.
My passion is dogs and dog shows so I hope to use it extensively at Dog Shows and will probably be asking for loads of advice in the future re lens etc for better pictures at dog shows.
PS I did use it briefly at a show I was Judging at on Sunday by taking pictures of my winners but it died when I was taking a picture of the Best of Breed - the 'battery depleted' came up and the camera shut down. However, when I got home it was fine again.. so I have updated the firmware and it is still running on the original batteries.
