As far as buying goes, definitely my vote goes for SRS. I bought my K10D with kit lens from them and it arrived the next day (no charges for forum members).
They also have used gear which they warrant for 6 months, just give them a call.
If your mum has plenty of Pentax gear, then going for Pentax DSLR is a smart choice, but if your mum is thinking of going for auto focus only, then any other brand will do really.
If your mum has not had a digital camera before, all will be the same in terms of handling menus and the lot (for the most part).
One thing I would advise would be to get something you think would suit her ergonomically: size, weight, grip... Will likely be far more important for her than this gizmo or the other...
By the way, check your lenses against a bright light, if they have been stored for a long time, they might have fungus and other dirt inside. Dirt is not an issue, but fungi are (spider web looking clouds in the glass).
Concerning the Program A, I only know of a place in Edinburgh that might sort it out for you, it should be an easy fix. However, ebay is filled with used film SLRs, you can buy a good used one for cheap. Unless yours is the silver and black version of the Program A, which is more rare.

The Program A is my mum's, it's on loan to me but definately needs fixed and it's just the standard black one

I think the only camera shop of any worth in the north is ffordes in Beauly. Would be worth a visit if you were in Inverness.
