I have done a lot of research for our own purposes (although yet to take the plunge) and back what Unlocker is saying. I have had that chart as our 'bible' in helping us decide what to buy.
Also agree that general electronic chain stores are useless - even John Lewis.
Sony are generally good but are having a number of issues with uneven 'backlightong ' of their LCD sets at the momment - see What Hi Fi Sound and Vision website / forum for details.
We have a 'shortlist' from reading (print or online) "What Hi Fi Sound and Vision" & Home Cinema Chioce. Then go to somewhere that will do you a specific demo. of those on your shortlist, most Richers', a Sevenoakes or similar.
Make sure it's a 32" they review / you see. Some brands have a range with the same basic numbers but the panels can vary in quality by size. Reviews confirm this.
Also KIV a lot depends on what you watch - we watch a lot of sci fi so 'blacks' are important. Also we are quite 'green' so power consumption matters to us. Hence, we are holding fire until more LED backlit models come onto the market over the next few months.

Another suggestion not mentioned so far I think - once you find roughly what you want, google the model number. There are always one or two lemons out there, and people can be fairly vociferous, but if you get lots of people describing the same fault, you might want to investigate further.
There are forums out there specific to TVs and associated equipment for example www.avforums.com . They may have useful advice.
One word of warning - with the emphasis on price as it tends to be these days, one of the areas which suffers is product proving, and there are more lemons put there than there used to be.

Well I've read through all the comments and one thing has not been mentioned I think is Power consumption! I have a 47" Philips 1080P and it is a great TV however one thing I didn't check was the power and it consumes 400 watts,
it's like a radiator panel great in the winter but here in Spain when its 38 degrees its not so good and electricity is not cheap, the latest TV's are low power consumption so I would check them out before before you decide, if I was buying again it would be an LG or Samsung.

Thanks again guys I had not relised there was so much to consider, from which shop to go and even to checking out power issues. I can see Im going to have to put a lot of homework in before making my choice LOL.

Morning Gareth what model is the TV you have and when did you purchase it.I bought my Samsung from Argos - was on offer and just bought it without seeing the picture just the box it was in Luckily it was a wise move as the picture is fantastic and we thought we were in HD when watching normal sky as the picture was leaps and bounds better than our old LG model, the picture is uber sharp, colours saturated nicely and its just so much more vibrant from our old LG.
