Having bought the K5iis, I'm not going to even consider commenting on your choice for fear of unleashing the wrath of the forum
Well spotted, no discount, unfortunately, just an error on my part I paid £379 not £349>

Like to add my tuppence worth to the 1.4x Tele debate. I look at it like this, the cost has bought me two new lenses, a 420mm 5.6 and a 77mm 2.4 (on my DA*s 300 and 55).
So,With a break in the weather thought I would test the new converter on a most willing subject, not the most rare of birds or the most difficult to photograph but one of the most photogenic you can easily find. (Eurasian) Oystercatcher . Car window and beanbag, very dull day and very near to minimal focus for the DA*300 and 1.4 Tele combo. Have also added first bumblebee of the year and Canada Goose ssp canadensis in for good measure.(monopod used)
Enjoy

Looks good to me. There are plenty of places to use it too in your part of the world.
Best regards, John

Well its now 2-3 weeks since the TC was released and owners have had the opportunity to use and test the TC, is it worth it?
My wife and I both currently use the Tamron 1.4x TC which I find works perfectly well with most lenses even the ones with SDM motors.
The other question is: does the camera list the increased focal length, when the TC is fitted, (i.e if you have a 300mm lens plus the TC does the camera report 300mm or 420mm?)
Or is there no indication of the TC's presence in the picture data at all?
Curious

Don't suppose it reports Sigma Etc. lenses correctly with the TC on?

Mine has literally just arrived and you are right it doesn't report the correct (adjusted) FL for my Siggy 70-200.Don't suppose it reports Sigma Etc. lenses correctly with the TC on?
I have tried it on my DA*300 reporting 420mm and I'm very pleased with the outcome. It works beautifully with my DA*50-135 and reports 70-189. With the DA*16-50 it reports 22-70.
IQ is very, very good indeed. I think it will be permanently fixed to the end of my 300 though
I now have a Pentax 140mm f4 1:1 WR macro lens.
I don't think I have ever been this happy (Bill Murray in Stripes)

Thanks for the responses, I will have to think on this one....its a bit expensive to splash out on just yet....
Maybe if I drop enough hints to my other half I might get one for my birthday....(some chance!!!)

Right Steve. You are now the man with a mission (should you choose to accept).
It has to be a moon shot, using the DA*300 with and without the convertor.
Tripod.
Mirror up.
ISO 100
f5.6 to f8
Please supply two raw files for us to do our own thing with
We can then compare directly with our own efforts.
Failing that, a rooftop and tv aerial, same thing, tripod, mirror up, raw files
Pushy? moi?

I've been suffering with the flu recently so not been able to venture out into the cold air. Today I took a little fresh air walk and took the DA*300 + 1.4 HD TC with me, here's some results.
1.

2. Works well in close up

3. Bokeh is a bit choppy (but this was at f10)

Wow, Steve the Peacock shot is the clincher for me here, it is so sharp and pops from the background so well. This proves beyond doubt that the new TC is quality glass and pairs with the DA*300 beautifully. You may have just made my mind up! I now need to spend over £1000 as I don't have either the DA*300 or the TC!

John, although I've already spent it £349 is a fair chunk of money and I am still debating the value. there needs to be £349-worth of difference between an image taken with the TC and the same image taken without and cropped to the same size. At the moment I haven't fully accepted the fact that there is.
If it was a 1.7 or 2.0 than I think it would be more difficult to get the cropped image to match up.
I shall continue to try it with all my lenses (once my camera is fixed:roll and post as many observations as I can.
Anyway, I also did the cost benefit analysis when I was trying to choose which K5II variant to buy. Went for the K5II instead of the K5IIs and put the £150 'saved' towards a Fuji X20.
No regrets, but then since I don't have a K5IIs to compare against I wouldn't know if I should regret buying my K5II or not!
