Well, my first post here, so hello!

Firstly, having seen Alan yesterday evening at our local camera club I can say that he was back on his usual form which I'm pleased to be able to say.

Secondly, thanks to everybody who made it to Harewood last Saturday for making me feel welcome and allowing me to have a play with various lenses, camera bodies etc.

Now, on with a few of my pics from the day:

What have they found?



It'll be that red kite. Unfortunately I couldn't stay long enough for the clouds to clear and the light to be good, so this was taken under an overcast sky earlier in the day. I think he's spotted me!:

Finally a shot with the Sigma 10-20 (which I just knew Graham would want after having a play!) and the £2 welding glass 10 stop filter. Using a custom white balance setting you can bring the colours back to something reasonable. The grounds were quite busy so I used the filter to get a very slow shutter (30s) which blurs out the visitors leaving the grounds looking quiet:

A great set Anthony and welcome, that macro worked out quite well then! You have captured the mood of the day well and it was good to meet you. By the way the welding glass is on its way but I will have to lens will have to wait.

Thanks Graham. If you went for the welding glass; mine was superglued to an empty filter ring, then I went around the outside with some silicon bathroom sealant to make it light-tight. The edges of the glass were pretty sharp so I put some tape around them. It's ugly but it works better than you should expect for an outlay of about £3! At iso 200 and 30s an aperture of around f4.5 (overcast) to f8 (sunny) is about right. It's also essential to cover the viewfinder eyepiece up during exposure - I always thought that was only needed when metering as the mirror would cover the focus screen during exposure but trust me, light still leaks in during the exposure if you don't.

I think your camera is faulty. I'm much better looking than that!

Anyway, Whitby here we come....

Thanks for the advice, I plan to use an old Cokin filter adapter that I have lying around and I have ordered a 10 grade glass, now let the fun commence.

I have my own large bag sitting in the cupboard, shame I don't yet have the lenses to fill it, talk about putting the cart before the horse.
