HARD light

I can see how stricking the shot is, but the first thing I saw was the reflection in the glasses. Is that the intention?

the concept is fine, its nice and moody, and I can see what you've done it (two kickers) but two things i'm not keen on - the lack of backlight on his hair making it disappear into the background (its an either-or thing here - either you can see all his hair or you can't see any of it, but you've got both scenarios). The other is the hot spot reflection in the sunglasses which is quite distracting. - but I guess this was deliberate?
Apart from that, good work, and keep experimenting - hard light is much harder (ho ho) to work with than soft light, which is one reason why its so unfashionable nowadays!

Nice light, agree about the hair light, and I also think he should have been looking straight at the camera, and not - apparently - at your right hip

Its an arresting image and very well done. I agree its bettrr without the bright spot in his glasses and I think there is just enough highlight in his hair to seperate the top of his head from the background. Good stuff.

as flossie said "hard light is not as easy as high key"
it's also funny that I call a snoot other people have diffrent names for it

A snoot and a kicker are two very different things, a snoot is a narrow cone, often with a honeycomb on the end, that gives a narrow controlled beam of light. A kicker is pretty much any kind of low pwered lamp that 'kick' a little fill in.
I agree with what Flossie says about soft light, no skill-just fill, IMO!
