Avoid. It is a scammers dream. Shame it is an eBay company and they do so little to protect anyone.

You need to explain that a bit more walkeja! After all, we do trust eBay with our financial details and addresses and so on when we open accounts with them. Likewise PayPal. Don't even trust ebay!
You might not trust all buyers and sellers, but that's a different issue.

Heard and read too many bad reports about ebay, one from a colleague who was money being taken from his account by ebay even though he had not bid for an item, and many reports in "The Times" from people who had bad experiences with ebay. Definitely not trustworthy.

Of course numpties will always be vulnerable to being ripped off, no matter how safe the system.
If you stick to the guidelines and use Paypal only, you should be fine! If Ebay took money from your account there would either be a good reason, e.g. fees you have incurred from selling items... I would imagine charging your account in error would be extrememly rare, and would be an error which could easily be resolved.

We need to realise that an organisation like eBay is very, very big. There will be a percentage of people who have unhappy stories, and some of those may be justified and some may be because sometimes people are awkward and won't do things the proper way.
Personal experiences are the ones that count and in several years of eBay dealing I have, so far, had no problems. The same goes for PayPal and Amazon, two other very large organisations.
It is, hoever, vital to follow their procedures properly.

I dont see that Gumtree is any different from any other classified listing and therefore very much a case of 'caveat emptor'.
I find it useful for selling my wedding photography but it tends to attract more budget conscious buyers.

Two (fairly quick) points:
1 - My query was about Gumtree. It was not, repeat NOT, about Ebay or Paypal. The scam I referred to is a fairly well known one that just happens to offer to pay (over the odds) via Paypal. The next bit is to ask for the excess postage to be refunded by Western Union. In my case, everything I have advertised on Gumtree has attracted scammers only - hence my query.
2 - I have just been notified that there was a new post in this thread - but the last post visible was the one from Ken 0n 4-6-11.

Gumtree isn't always bad, I've bought things from the Cambridge Gumtree and have yet to encounter a scam. Must be all those West Wiltshire gangsters

Well. And well again. I have tried advertising on Wiltshire Gumtree and Bath Gumtree - the scammers all seem to come from London, Kent, or Essex. I have tried a couple or three times, and all I get is scammers (usually of the "I will pay you over the odds to send it to my friend, and pay you by PayPal" persuasion. My ads have always stated that I do not do PayPal.
