I wondered if I should look at this thread, particularly with an invitation to "guess what I've been doing"
Anyway curiosity got the better of me and I am pleased to say I wasn't shocked or offended

I like the contrast between the colour of the water and the colour of the metalwork, but......thats about as far as it goes, for me anyway, sorry mate!

I can see where your coming from with the lead in over the bridge but it doesnt' lead anywhere, maybe I would like it more if it was more symetrical? maybe not.

I sincerely hope you posted this pic for some honest critique (cos thats the only kind I do ) but for me it just doesnt work, having said all that I have to put my hands up and admit if I had seen that I would have snapped it as well that water is just soooo tempting.

Quick Edit......the exposure is spot on

Oh no! you don't like it!.... and you told me too!!! I only ever post up here for praise and congratulations.

I'll never take another photo again.

Thanks for the honest feedback, I'd never thought about it not 'going anywhere', I was more intrigued by the texture and regular structure of the metalwork contrasted to the water and trees.

thanks again got your comments.

What struck me most in this pleasing image is the amazing range of shades in everything - the water, the bridge, the trees....

The exposure is perfect and so is the lighting - time of day.

I like it.

I was out and 'on site' by 7am, this is Cwmwernderi Res, between Port Talbot and Maesteg, also known as 'the blue lagoon' or 'turquoise pond'.

Burnt out the sky a bit on this one, even with a ND Grad, (need to get a darker one).

Actually, it does - it leads to some form of valve gear typical of reservoirs and as such makes a pleasing "industrial" shot. Add the other elements of merit - colour, contrast, structure etc and it is IMHO excellent, but then I so dislike the formulaic images that seem so popular (ie so common) these days.

Ploughed fields leading off into the distance - so yesterday
Bales of hay in neat rows - so boring
Rusty corrugated iron - where is the skill in that
Rule of thirds (when so obviously executed (though not in this case)) - a real turn off
Central positioning of the subject - often so lazy
Waves/waterfalls timed out to soggy cotton wool - everyone does it.
Rows of multicoloured changing huts on the beach - leaves me cold
Sunsets/sunrises - difficult to be original with these

I guess you cannot please every one, so well done. Give me something a little bit different. I might be alone out here, but I like this image.
Keep up the good work
Graham

I'll think of something someday.

Sorry

Like I said I would have taken it myself, it IS a nice scene, its just not got that WOW factor.

Maybe I am been over critical (listening to judges at the camera club does that to a person y'know) I tend to do a critique on an image with a view to it been a competition entry.

The first of the second two is more to my liking, but how can I criticise it without seeming over critical again? lets see, IMHO I would have lost a bit off the bottom, leaving about an inch below the penquins (sorry my eyes are bloodshot, too much beer ) it would also crop off those dust on sensor spots that you failed to clone out (yes I have done that too, we all have )

Sorry
If that's aimed at me, no need. I'm not annoyed or upset. My comments in the post following yours above was meant to be a joke. If it came across as anything but a laugh, then I apologise.

Goddammit, I thought I had all those dust spots!!

I am in two minds on the cropping you suggested, one part of me wanted to crop more (I have cropped from the original) and a greater part of me said to keep in the reflections of the trees, so that's what I did.

I do appreciate critique though.

btw, they are not penguins, them is ostriches.

Hi aj,

the colour of the water in the original image.. gorgeous.. utterly gorgeous. Go back with a chainsaw, and take down the tree on the right, and centre the composition. The key for me though is the colour of the water. I may have mentioned that before..

Cheers

The water does look good, but I think it may be slightly toxic, I assume it is copper based. There are frogs there but I've not seen an fish.

It is certainly a tranquil place... until the motocrossers come around on the w/e.

i regularly ride around there (on my mountain bike)

Thought I would follow the theme of reflections and greenery and 'stuff' so here's my little one from holiday.

Overall, not bad. Two comments:

1 It's a bit over-saturated.
2 The foliage would have been better a bit lower down, so that more of the lake/loch could have been seen. In other words, you should have been a bit taller!

It was clearly a lovely day, and a beautiful spot.

It was a georgeous day.
I haven't done anything with the saturation, but I will see how it looks taken down.
The foliage was huge! Even stading on the nearby bench wouldn't have made much of a difference.

Thanks for the comments.

I think its a very good panaramic shot, The colours and clarity do it for me. And i agree with Old timer i think it does lead somewhere. The eye follows the gantry to its end and then leads into the forest. I really like it.

And by the way, thems not ostriches they are a tad too big i'm convinced they are Emu's
