I like these....though number 5 must be from a VERY old headline
love the perspective of the train in number 3...makes it look so imposing.
tag number 5 under "fantasy"

I suspect that newspaper headline is from 1974.
That line below 'United' is actually a fold.
The full headline reads:
Newcastle
United
______________
Lose Again
Liverpool are
_______________
FA Cup
Victors

Carl, that is exactly the right headline
They did have tougher censorship in 1974, so maybe there was a picture of a horse being punched in there as well.

A fine set. It really is an underrated railway. My son and I spent all day there last Sunday and took lots of pictures. The scenery is a bit "eastern" but the stations are beautifully presented and the staff kindly folk.
My son is horrified by the green and named 9F but I didn't let that spoil the day...

Great set of images Barrie. I've been to this railway quite a few times and its always offered fine photo opportunities. The St Lamiel picture is the most impressive for me but they all pack plenty of historical atmosphere.
The 9F also reminds me of the Tyne Dock-Consett iron ore trains. They used to come rattling past my house and when I was a young reporter on the local paper I managed to con British Rail into giving me a footplate pass from Tyne Dock to Consett so I could write a feature on how iron ore was delivered to the steelworks. It was a very dramatic experience.
The 9F in your picture has just been painted green and given the name Cromwell. Last year it was in British Rail black and carried the name Cock o the North on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
As for Newcastle United...the less aid the better.

All good, but the 2nd one, the long platform view, is the best for me ... Very nicely composed and the eye is drawn right through.

A lovely set Barrie. Railways are not my thing but I can appreciate good images, like these and the bicycle ones Andrew posted.

Thanks for all the comments, including the football history lesson. But I think the era of the railway is, unfortunately, set well before 1974.

I recognized this class of engine from train spotting in the early '60's. They used to haul ore trains on a line, between Tyne Dock and Consett Iron Company, not far from our house.
