GPS Module

What's happened to all the interest in the GPS module?

Pentax deny any knowledge of any such module, so has it died a death?

As the K7 comes compete with video, are we now going to get a K9GTS, with carbon fibre body, self levelling horizon mode,any colour as long as it's black,automatic focus ,automatic zoom,Gps position LED display,solar powered battery,radio controlled date and time,hydraualic self extending tripod, and a tea making module for those long trips in the field?,

Well I have a little different opinion on GPS modules in camera's. If for one don't like them for the following reasons:

1) uses extra power
2) needs time to get a fix unless it is powered all the time even when the camera is turned off.
3) only works with the camera it is built into and only adds GPS data to photo's.

The only positive aspect of a built in GPS module is that you don't have to do extra work afterwards. But adding GPS data during postprocessing takes only a small amount of time compared to the overall processing of the images.

I use a seperate small GPS data logger which works for 24 hours on a single charge and logs data every second. It has a 2GB microSD card which is enough for more then a year of storing data...

When going for a long walk or when I am going on holiday it is logging data while walking or driving so you get a full GPS track of your route. When you take pictures the location is allready logged and you only need to add the data to the images on the PC.
The nice thing is that one logger works for all the camera's you take with you. So I sync my pictures and the pictures my girlfriend takes with her compact at the same time.

When going on vacation I use the following setup.
My Navigation system is logging all data while driving, so when taking pictures close to the car the location is known. When I am away from the car for a longer period I start the GPS logger.
At home I just run GeoSetter to import the GPS tracks and sync the data to the images. GeoSetter allso adds loads of extra information like city and country information in text form and it downloads the correct altitude from the GPS location because GPS receivers aren't allways accurate in the altitude department.

Didn't SRS announce a K20D GPS model last year - it never seemed to show up?

I am surprised this wasn't built in to the K-7 or the grip though.

Other than as a toy, I don't see the point of a GPS module at all. So far I know pretty well where all my images have been taken (but then my collection so far only holds about 6000 images).
