I am at a complete loss as to what the point of this thread is.

I think it's an exhortation to someone with known LBA to buy a lens the rest of us would love, but can't afford!

They are probably still here and Pentax don't presently make anything longer than 300mm.Where have all the people complaining that Pentax doesn't make any long glass gone!
How much is a new Pentax 600mm f/4 or 400mm f/2.8?
Anyone needing either of the above have to troll eBay for a used example or invest in Canikon. The long Pentax glass of yesteryear is a match for any of today's offerings, but it's history, long gone.
Its never good to dwell in the past. Only those long time Pentax enthusiasts remember those lenses. Recent Pentax users are generally unaware that they ever existed.

There is no way I would pay a private seller that amount of money without being able to pick up the item in person.
That is the reason I didnt go for the 250-600mm Danny purchased, never mind going to Denmark
As for the comment about Pentax not doing long glass .. no, they still don't but when I do decide to spend that sort of money I doubt it will be with Pentax anyway.

Yes they do, the 600/4 being one such example. It's not sold "officially" outside Japan due to the lead used in the solder making it fall foul of EU and other regulations, but if you really want one you can get it through a special order and import it personally. They are probably still here and Pentax don't presently make anything longer than 300mm.

The 400/2.8 is an older design and I'm not aware of it still being made, the 600/4 was about £6200 when I last looked around 18 months ago, exchange rates have been all over the place since though. How much is a new Pentax 600mm f/4 or 400mm f/2.8?

I'd settle for an old K 300mm f4 to be honest. Only snag is they all go well above the £100 mark which is something of a cut-off for me with old lenses. I'll pay up to that for something rare or special but no more.
(says he who is going to be on the hunt for a 100/2.8 before long - first one to appear on ebay for £100 or so in decent shape after I've been refunded for that mouldy 35/2.8 will be mine!)

I am aware that the 600 can be grey imported but two other 600mm optics are off the shelf with full UK warranty. The 400mm quote was more tongue in cheek as they definitely don't make a 400mm f/2.8.
Either way, a system comparison leaves us Pentax users at a lens disadvantage, albeit in certain areas.
Those who shoot wildlife are compromised unless they buy third party glass. Now that is fine but I personally like to use a bespoke system i.e. Pentax bodies and Pentax glass. I have no third party glass on my Nikons. I have some third party glass that I frequently use, a 70-200mm Sigma EX Mk1 and a 50-500mm Bigma Mk1.
At the end of the day, for a very large percentage of users, the Pentax system is as good as any other out there with IQ that speaks volumes. It’s the fringe minority of photog’s that use extreme glass that have to eat elsewhere.
Best regards
