Global Shutter

Interesting release of the new Sony a9 III sporting its new Global Shutter and what it possibly means for the future of digital photography. Not cheap at 6k but i'm sure even at that price it's likely to prove a big hit. I wonder if that sensor will find its way into a Pentax camera any time soon

Had to look up what a global shutter is! Seems the way to go for recording fast movement and getting insanely quick flash sync speeds. However, it also seems to limit dynamic range and low light capability. So swings and roundabouts.

Fortunately for me I can't see anything about it that would be particularly useful to me, so I'll have to find something else to spend that 6k I haven't got on

Um, me too.

Um, me too.

Admittedly If I was wanting to spend 6k on a camera I rather think I'd be looking at the latest Pentax 645.
Never-the-less, judging by some of the very enthusiastic reviews I have seen on this new Sony, it would appear it's going to be a hit. Time will tell!

For most everyday use the global shutter is not needed. If you are photographing fast-moving objects you will get distortion unless you use a global shutter. The classic example is the propellers of an airplane where the blades look curved instead of straight. It takes more "horsepower" to read the entire sensor instantly as opposed to line by line. that will add to the cost.
